Why Knowing What’s True Has Everything to Do With Getting Beyond This World of Horrors

A Presentation and Exchange on the New Communism developed by Bob Avakian

Monday, June 5, 2017
3:00 to 5:00 pm
The Black Forum, Haines 153, UCLA

Bob Avakian is the architect of a whole new framework of human emancipation, the new synthesis of communism. This new synthesis is a continuation of, but also a qualitative leap beyond, and in some important ways a break with, previous communist theory. Essential to this new communism is its emphasis on applying a thoroughly and consistently scientific method and approach to understanding the dynamics of society and to charting pathways for its revolutionary transformation.

This work is needed more urgently than ever. The regime in power aims to consolidate a fascist America, and is aiming to silence and quash critical thinking and dissent, replacing “alternative facts” for truth, as part of enforcing ever greater suffering on the masses of humanity—while the world capitalist-imperialist system plunders and devastates the planet, threatening its very existence.

Join us for a discussion of what the breakthroughs in the New Communism have to do with getting beyond a world where “might makes right.”

Presenter:
Andy Zee, spokesperson for Revolution Books, NYC, speaking on behalf of The Bob Avakian Institute

Discussants:
Andrew Apter, Professor of Anthropology and History, UCLA
Juan Gómez-Quiñones, Professor of History, UCLA

  • Does science apply to human society? Or are there separate realities and distinct truths for people of different identities? Is science required to get free or is it just another narrative?
  • How does the scientific method and approach of the new communism open up new possibilities to achieve a radically different and far better society and world, and that could lead to the emancipation of all humanity?

Join co-sponsors The Bob Avakian Institute, Ralph J. Bunche Center for African American Studies, Academic Advancement Program and Reynaldo F. Macias (Dept. of Chicana/o Studies) for this vibrant discussion about understanding and radically changing the world.

For humanity to advance beyond a state in which “might makes right”—and where things ultimately come down to raw power relations—will require, as a fundamental element in this advance, an approach to understanding things (an epistemology) which recognizes that reality and truth are objective and do not vary in accordance with, nor depend on, different “narratives” and how much “authority” an idea (or “narrative”) may have behind it, or how much power and force can be wielded on behalf of any particular idea or “narrative,” at any given point.
