Women and LGBTQ people are full human beings, not objects to be grabbed, demeaned, victimized, and denied their fundamental right to control their reproduction, and how they choose to live.

The Trump/Pence Regime on Women and LGBTQ:

What they have done

  • Promised to appoint Supreme Court justices who would overturn the Roe v. Wade decision legalizing abortion; appointed Neil Gorsuch.
  • Trump signed a law giving states the option to deny funding for Planned Parenthood and other organizations that provide legal abortions.
  • Slashed funding to combat HIV/AIDS in the world’s poorest countries by 17 percent.
  • Drastically reduced funding to women’s health care globally that provided access to birth control.
  • Trump revoked Executive Order 13673 that required that companies receiving large federal contracts demonstrate that they have complied with laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender stereotyping, or gender identity.
  • Trump took down the Office of National AIDS Policy website the day he took office, and there has been no replacement.
  • Revoked federal guidelines that mandated transgender students have the right to use public restrooms that match their gender identity.

What they said they will do

  • Several states already have “trigger laws” on the books that would immediately make all abortion illegal, except when the pregnant woman’s life is in danger, should the Supreme Court overturn Roe v. Wade.
  • Proposed a budget and Republican “health care” bill which would cut hundreds of billions of dollars from Medicaid and slash Planned Parenthood funding—endangering the lives of millions of women who rely on them for lifesaving cancer tests, maternity care, and birth control. Trump/Pence is also attempting to make birth control more difficult for women to obtain.
  • Six members of Trump’s Presidential Advisory Council on HIV/AIDS resigned, stating his regime will push “legislation that will harm people living with HIV and halt or reverse important gains made in the fight against this disease.”
  • Proposed Trump/Pence budget includes a $186 million funding cut for the Centers for Disease Control’s HIV/AIDS prevention, testing and support programs.
  • Proposed huge cuts to the National Institutes of Health, including $550 million cuts to HIV/AIDS research.
  • Proposed $800 million cuts from the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR) and U.S. Agency for International Development programs addressing the AIDS pandemic—meaning there will be more than 830,000 AIDS treatment interruptions leading to an estimated 130,000 more deaths at minimum.

What they have unleashed nationally

  • States are passing one anti-abortion law after another, including a bill in Missouri that would allow employers to fire women who use birth control and landlords to evict women who have had an abortion or who are unwed mothers.
  • In the first three months of 2017, 431 anti-abortion measures were introduced in state legislatures, and five states (Arizona, Arkansas, Kentucky, Utah, and Wyoming) passed 10 laws putting new restrictions on abortions.
  • A new law in Arkansas bans a common and safe method for second trimester abortions and any abortion for sex selection.
  • Another new Utah law mandates that women receive “counseling” on “a medically unproven method to stop a medication abortion from completion after a first dose of the two-dose regimen,” according to the Guttmacher Institute.
  • An unrepentant sexual predator, Trump in office repeatedly tweets degrading, violently misogynist attacks on women—helping create a culture of sexual assault, crude degradation, objectification and gross/open/celebrated disrespect towards women.  Women are being threatened by men, even boys invoking Trump: “With Trump, we can grab you by the pussy,” one group yelled at a woman in Virginia.
