On Saturday, September 23, Stevie Wonder was one of the performers at the Global Citizen Festival at Central Park in New York City. Before starting his set, Stevie Wonder took a stand of solidarity with NFL athletes refusing to stand for the national anthem. Before an audience of 60,000 people, Wonder said, “Tonight I’m taking a knee for America.” After getting down on one knee, he said, “But not just one knee; I'm taking both knees. Both knees in prayer for our planet, our future, our leaders of the world and our globe. Amen.”

Stevie Wonder joined other artists at the Global Citizen Festival, an annual concert that’s part of a movement that wants to end poverty, tackle climate change, and fight inequalities. In this spirit, Wonder said from the stage, “All of us are valuable and important and must take care of each other and this planet. If we don't, we could lose the ultimate video game of life.... Our global brothers and sisters, I didn't come here to preach, but I'm telling you: Our spirits must be in the right place... Whenever you need to interrupt hate, stand down bigotry, condemn sexism and find love for all of our global brothers and sisters everyday."

A real highlight of Wonder's set was when he teamed up with Pharrell Williams to perform John Lennon’s “Imagine.”
