Stop Patriarchy is mobilizing people to go to Texas for the Abortion Rights Freedom Ride 2014 because we refuse to sit back and allow women to be slammed back to the horrors of pre-Roe conditions. We draw inspiration from the original Freedom Riders because of their willingness to put everything on the line to stop a horrible injustice that millions had grown to accept as “just the way things are.” At stake today is whether women—one half of humanity—will be legally treated as less than full human beings.
With the passage of House Bill 2 (HB2) last summer, all eyes are on Texas as “ground zero” in the fight for abortion rights. Clinics have been forced to close and women are already beginning to resort to desperate and dangerous measures to self-induce abortions. In the Rio Grande Valley near the U.S.-Mexico border, where a high percentage of poor and immigrant women live, not one clinic remains and birth control has come under increasing attack.
What happens in Texas will affect women everywhere.
