From Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund

Needed: More Volunteers

March 2, 2015 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us

The Prisoners Revolutionary Literature Fund is an educational literature fund that fills requests from U.S. prisoners for revolutionary literature. The main requests received by PRLF from those behind bars are complimentary subscriptions in Spanish and English to the weekly newspaper Revolution and for revolutionary and other books. No matter where you are and whether you can spend an hour every couple of weeks or more time, you can make a real difference by stepping forward to volunteer with PRLF. The prisoners’ letters are so full of life, engagement with ideas, and unique, powerful stories that it is an honor and lots of fun to be part of helping to get the PRLF literature to the prisoners and to share their thoughtful and challenging letters with the world. As long as you have access to the Internet, there are many ways you can help:

  • The letters from prisoners that appear in Revolution newspaper and on revcom.us are hand-written and mailed to PRLF and then typed into electronic form by volunteers around the country. We expect many letters in response to the Appeal to Prisoners to write about Stop Mass Incarceration Network’s Call for April 14.
  • Do you have experience with web design (especially WordPress)? PRLF needs at least one person to help rebuild our website, which is a key form for getting the prisoners’ letters out into society, spread the news and needs of PRLF, and to raise the essential funds for Revolution and other literature.
  • Another urgent need is people fluent in Spanish who can translate and type letters from subscribers who receive Revolution newspaper in Spanish, Revolución.
  • Are you savvy about social media, have ideas for how to get PRLF and the letters out there?
  • Got ideas for fundraising, writing grants, reaching out to others to let them know they can make a huge difference by donating to PRLF?
  • If you are in the Chicago area, you can join with others and be part of the great discussions while we mail newspapers to prisoners every other Monday. The next mailing is Monday, March 14, from 11 am-4 pm at Revolution Books, 1103 N. Ashland. Call 773-960-6952 for more information.
  • TO VOLUNTEER write to PRLF_fund@PRLF.org. Please tell us briefly why you are interested in PRLF and what you would like to do, as well as how much time you can spend. Your contribution will be very welcome by other volunteers and the prisoners who rely on PRLF for this educational opportunity to engage with world events and key political, cultural, and philosophical questions of the day from a unique revolutionary perspective.
