On Wednesday, December 21, Jewish Voice for Peace (JVP) and other groups, including Islamic organizations, demonstrated in some 25 cities across the U.S., against anti-Muslim repression and racist attacks. The JVP said that the actions aimed to “highlight opposition to the views and policies of President-Elect Trump, Israeli PM Netanyahu and appointees like David Friedman.” They said that “While policies like heightened surveillance of Muslims and U.S. state violence against communities of color, both domestically and internationally, have been a reality for some time, the incoming presidential administration has proposed even more blatantly racist and discriminatory policies, and emboldened disturbing levels of violence against Muslims and those perceived to be Muslim.”
People at the protests held signs in the shape of a menorah listing commitments including: “We refuse to be silent about anti-Muslim and racist hate speech and hate crimes”; “We condemn state surveillance of the Muslim community”; “We fight anti-Muslim profiling and racial profiling in all its forms”; “We call for an end to racist policing”; “We protest the use of Islamophobia and anti-Arab racism to justify Israel’s repressive policies against Palestinians.”
