No Return to “Normalcy”
COVID at This “Rare Moment” in History, Contributing to and Manifesting This...

In the spring of 2020, as COVID began to tear through the world, we published “THE DEADLY ILLUSION OF ‘NORMALCY’ AND THE REVOLUTIONARY WAY FORWARD” by Bob Avakian (BA). This article has proved prescient in many respects, including its statement that: “Whatever happens in regard to the elections that are scheduled to be held this November [the presidential election of 2020 that Biden won], and however the coronavirus crisis is resolved—or if it is not really resolved but becomes part of ‘cascading crises,’ with one crisis leading to another... and another—there will be no returning to some idealized notion of ‘normalcy.’” [emphasis added]
In THIS IS A RARE TIME WHEN REVOLUTION BECOMES POSSIBLE—WHY THAT IS SO, AND HOW TO SEIZE ON THIS RARE OPPORTUNITY, BA goes into the way that these “cascading” crises and break from “normalcy”—stemming from and manifesting in the sharp divides atop the ruling strata of society, including in this instance in different and conflicting approaches to COVID from the Republican-fascists and the Democrats—can lead to a situation in which the main factors for a revolutionary situation, an actual revolution, could be ripened. In particular, the profound point that:
... the deepening and sharpening conflicts among the ruling powers, and in the society overall, provides a stronger basis and greater openings to break the hold of this system over masses of people.
It is extremely important to deeply understand this:
As this situation develops, and the ruling class is more and more unable to rule in the old way, society and daily life for masses of people, from different parts of society, can become increasingly unsettled and chaotic, with frequent “disruptions” of the “normal” way things have been.
And as “the normal way” society has been ruled is failing to hold things together—and society is increasingly being ripped apart—this can shake people’s belief that “the way things have always been” is the only way things can be. It can make people more open to questioning—in a real sense it can force people to question—the way things have been, and whether they have to stay that way. And this is all the more likely to happen if the revolutionary forces are out among the people shining a light on the deeper reality of what is happening, and why, and bringing out that there IS an alternative to living this way.

As the articles grouped here reveal, this crisis continues and develops, “cascading” with others.
Much of what is pointed to and analyzed in what we are excerpting here from BA—especially the ways in which the economic and social relations, and the political structures reflecting and reinforcing them, cause tremendous unnecessary suffering—is sharply exposed in “Oppressive, Parasitic Workings of Capitalism-Imperialism Continue Needless COVID-19 Horrors,” "The Crippling Role of Republi-fascist Governors in the Fight Against COVID," and “Check It Out: ‘The Kindergarten Exodus.’” These articles also bear out the point from BA—including as illustrated in “The Crippling Role of Republi-fascist Governors in the Fight Against COVID”—that, even with Biden now in office, the fascist movement “amplifies and fortifies the barriers that the ‘normal functioning’ of the capitalist-imperialist system places in the way of a systematic and coordinated approach to combating the coronavirus.”
The article on "Why Everyone who Can Should Take the COVID-19 Vaccine" and “Communique #4 from the Revcoms: We Need a Whole Different World. How the Revolution Would Deal with Epidemics” give concrete examples of the need for a scientific outlook and approach to this disease; as well as the ways in which the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America provides a whole different framework for how such crises would be approached, taken up, and resolved—with an actual revolution and under a radically different state power.
