Guess what percentage of core Trump supporters in South Carolina wish the South had won the Civil War?

What were the motives of the core supporters of Donald Trump? And do we deal with them by trying to find “common ground”?

A poll taken in February, leading into the Republican primary in South Carolina revealed...

  • 38 percent of Trump supporters wish the South had won the Civil War. 24 percent were glad the North won, and 38 percent couldn’t decide.
  • After Dylann Roof massacred nine African-Americans in a Charleston church, in the midst of a nationwide uproar and outrage over the Confederate flag, 70 percent of Republicans who said they were voting for Trump said they “Support the Confederate flag hanging on the [South Carolina] capital grounds.”
  • 80 percent of Trump voters support his proposed ban on Muslims entering the United States.

Are those motives, of core supporters of Trump, something to find “common ground” with?

Rather than looking to find “common ground” with values like these, we have to confront how deep the racism, the national chauvinism, and the hatred of women is woven into this society... and how profoundly dangerous it would be for Donald Trump to assume the presidency. We cannot give in to this, including in the form of looking for “common ground” with it. We have to vigorously expose, challenge, and fiercely oppose it. It is only on the basis of sharply confronting people with these views that they can change.
