For several decades, thousands of Christian Fascists have invaded San Francisco every year for a so-called “Walk for Life” on the anniversary of the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion. This year’s march comes at a decisive juncture as the Supreme Court stands poised to overturn or drastically restrict the right to abortion. Going up against this fascist parade, the Revolution Club called for a protest to call on people to STOP this onslaught on this basic and fundamental right and to raise “Break the Chains! Unleash the Fury of Women as a Mighty Force for Revolution”—to call for people to step forward into the struggle to put an end to this system that enforces the oppression of women and so many other horrors.
The Revolution Club, Bay Area, called on people to join the counter-protest: “Everyone who believes that women and girls are full human beings deserving dignity and respect should join us now.” Another member of the Revolution Club challenged people that women will lose this basic and fundamental right unless, in the comings months, millions of people come into the streets to stop it. People brought out that the clash over abortion was part of a bigger clash where this system cannot rule in the same way and, while that holds the prospect of a terrible future, it also holds the possibility of revolution and bringing into being a truly liberating society. Copies of the palm card advertising the recent talk by Bob Avakian, “Something Terrible, Or Something Truly Emancipating,” were widely distributed.
One woman who was in tears after passing by the anti-abortionists ended up joining the protest and leading chants on a bullhorn. Another young woman brought out that seeing the reactionaries brought to mind growing up in a Pentecostal family where her father beat her and her mother.
As the march passed by about 50 people holding signs lined the barricades that had been set up by the police. “Christian Fascist Theocrats Get Your Laws and Vigilantes off Our Bodies!” “Patriarchy and Capitalism, You Can’t End One Without Ending the Other! Revolution Nothing Less!” “Break the Chains! Unleash the Fury of Women as a Mighty Force for Revolution!” Angry chants rang out: “We won't back down! We Won't Submit! Fuck your women hating shit!” Women in Chains or Revolution? I Choose Revolution.”
What happened in San Francisco pointed to the potential for the emergence of a force that is determined to STOP the attacks on abortion and fight for a different future.
