European Parliament Opposes Execution
of Mumia Abu-JamalRevolutionary Worker #988, December 27, 1998
On December 17, the European Parliament voted to send an "urgent address" to Governor Ridge of Pennsylvania not to carry through the execution of political prisoner Mumia Abu-Jamal. This marks a significant development in the international campaign to stop the execution of Mumia.
The European Parliament is made up of elected delegates from various countries within Europe. In addition to their resolution on Mumia, the MEPs (members of the European Parliament) called for an immediate moratorium on all executions in the world. They called on governments within the European Union not to extradite people in cases that might lead to execution. And they appealed to the Florida Supreme Court to stop the execution of the death row prisoner Joaquim Jose Martinez.
A delegation made up of Ramona Africa, Julia Wright, Angela Davis, Mumia's attorney Leonard Weinglass and Sam Jordan attended the European Parliament in Strasbourg, France, to expose the railroad of Mumia Abu-Jamal and the injustice of the death penalty in the United States.
