Occupation Photo Op

On April 9 the whole world saw television footage of Iraqi men waving American and Iraqi flags, toppling the giant statue of Saddam Hussein in Baghdad's Fardus Square, with help from some newly arrived U.S. Marines. The impression from the footage and the coverage was that a huge spontaneous crowd of "grateful citizens" were welcoming the U.S. troops as "liberators."

Now evidence has surfaced that suggests this whole scene was a pre-planned propaganda hoax. The respected British journalist Robert Fisk described this scene as "the most staged photo opportunity since Iwo Jima."

Reuters news service published this wide area shot of that same scene--showing what really went down. In this wide shot you can see that there was really only a small group of Iraqi men in the middle of the square surrounded by a ring of U.S. armored vehicles.
