A conversation with author Caroline Elkins

Legacy of Violence: A History of the British Empire

An Official Brooklyn Book Festival "Bookend Event" hosted at Revolution Books in Harlem

Wall-to-wall mourning of the queen? Sentimentalizing brutal empire? WTF!
Come to Revolution Books to hear a true history of the British empire. Drawing on more than a decade of research on four continents, Caroline Elkins demonstrates how and why violence in Ireland, India, Palestine, Kenya and other colonies underwrote Britain's empire and the country's imperial identity at home. In short, the blood and bones on which liberal-democratic “civilizations” sit. Rigorous and passionate, exploding myths of Western paternalism and progress. Caroline Elkins is founding director of Harvard's Center for African Studies.

A panel will follow with historian Maya Jasanoff, author of The Dawn Watch: Joseph Conrad in a Globalized World, and Raymond Lotta, writer for revcom.us and a spokesperson for Revolution Books
