Welcome to the forum

The forum is focusing discussion on the New Year's Statement from Bob Avakian, A NEW YEAR, THE URGENT NEED FOR A RADICALLY NEW WORLD—FOR THE EMANCIPATION OF ALL HUMANITY, and related questions.

We have posted, to begin, questions that were raised by participants during the February 6 "Zoom into the Revolution" online seminar. We invite everyone to submit your own comments and questions, including responding to those of other participants in this forum.

Can you specifically speak to the details of the “openings” for revolution in these seismic “jolts” in society...

The statement highlights the contradiction in this moment of the Fascism of Trump’s regime laying bare the brutality and threat to all of humanity vs. the “different brutality” being brought forth by Biden and the Dems. that also represent the threat to all of humanity. Many people are “relieved” that Biden got in and are “going back to sleep.” Can you specifically speak to the details of the “openings” for revolution in these seismic “jolts” in society and what the analysis is for how we approach revolutionary work in light of the contradictions?

As to how we should approach revolutionary work in general, and particularly when there are "jolts", I think it would be important to go to what Bob Avakian says in his talk, Why We Need An Actual Revolution and How We Can Really Make Revolution (,…) specifically where he talks about "what we need to do now"... One very important question with bearing on this is: Where does the basis for revolution lie?

BA says, "A scientific approach and method leads to the understanding that the basis for revolution lies not in what most people are thinking or doing right now (or at any given time) but in the deep and defining contradictions of this system—what is concentrated in the “5 STOPS” and all the terrible suffering to which this system subjects millions, and billions, of people—which cannot be eliminated within this system."

People within society and the world constantly rise up against these forms of oppression, both those who directly suffer because of them, as well as those who are outraged and feel that they are intolerable and should no longer go on even if they are not directly the ones "under the gun" so to speak. We saw this with the "Beautiful Rising" against police brutality and murder, and before that with the tremendous jolt of the Trump/Pence fascist regime coming to power in 2016.

But spontaneously, not only will these uprisings and protests go nowhere in the final analysis - those who take part in them, by virtue of living in the society they live in, and being inculcated with the ways of thinking and "rules of the game" of the existing system, have not only a tendency but a *striving* to come under the wing of the bourgeoisie (Bob Avakian talks about this in his talk "Making Revolution and Emancipating Humanity" - Basically, people will look for a section of the ruling class to "come under the wing of" for "support and protection" - people will want, spontaneously, to go into the camp of the bourgeoisie. And it will take a conscious political fight, real struggle, to rupture people, in their masses, off of that path. You can think of all the ways that this relates to what's going on right now, with Biden. There's a tremendous striving among millions of people to come under the wing of Biden and the Democrats - precisely the same people that were outraged and horrified by the fascist program of Trump/Pence and are incensed by the events of the 1/6 Coup attempt -- these people who might rightly be called "decent people" who oppose all that are striving to come into the camp of Biden and the Democrats - right into the killing confines of the system which produced this fascism in the first place. And as BA put it in his New Year's Statement, "to the degree that things are maintained within the limits of this system, this will actually have the effect of furthering the horrors for humanity that are built into this system, while also reinforcing and giving further impetus to the underlying economic—and the social and political—forces that will strengthen the fascism that has already shown great strength in this country (and a number of others)."

So whenever there are these "jolts" the task of revolutionary communists is to relate to these jolts and seismic shifts, without getting swallowed up by their spontaneity - and to actively divert the struggles that do develop in accordance with our strategic objectives - through our revolutionary work, to as much as possible "push on" the objective situation to advance the revolution. This can be done through agitation, propaganda, timely interventions, and very crucially, spreading the leadership of BA in all this, in all that we are doing, and making this a point of reference for the struggle and for society broadly. Whether or not anything comes from 'jolts' or even mass uprisings and mass mobilizations, comes down to whether or not people will get linked up with, and struggled with to follow and take up, scientific communist leadership.
