Escalating War Dangers in Korea: Who’s the Biggest Warmonger and Threat to Humanity?
September 6, 2017 | Revolution Newspaper | revcom.us
After the North Korean regime announced on September 3 that it had tested a hydrogen bomb, the U.S. Secretary of War—sorry, “Defense”—James Mattis emerged from a White House meeting of the Trump godfathers and consiglieri—sorry, a “national security meeting”—to declare: “Any threat to the United States or its territories including Guam, or our allies, will be met with a massive military response, a response both effective and overwhelming.”
“Any threat”?!?! If we’re going to talk about “threats,” let’s look at the repeated threats that the Trump/Pence regime and the U.S. have made against North Korea just in the last few months.
- Mid-April: Vice President Pence made an official trip to the demilitarized zone that separates North and South Korea and threatened North Korea that the “era of strategic patience is over.” Back in Washington, Trump tweeted, “They gotta behave.”
- April 27: Trump said during a White House interview, “There is a chance that we could end up having a major, major conflict with North Korea. Absolutely.”
- June 30: After a White House meeting with the visiting South Korean president, Trump declared, “The era of strategic patience with the North Korean regime has failed and frankly, that patience is over.”
- August 1: Appearing on national TV, Republican Senator Lindsay Graham dismissed those who say the U.S. doesn’t have a military option against North Korea, saying, “There is a military option—to destroy North Korea’s [nuclear] program and North Korea itself... If there’s going to be a war to stop [North Korea], it will be over there. If thousands die, they’re going to die over there. They’re not going to die here. And [Trump] has told me that to my face.”
- August 8: After a North Korean missile test, Trump used the rhetoric of “Armageddon” to threaten North Korea with “fire and fury... power the likes of which this world has never seen before.”
- August 21: The U.S. began a week-long massive military exercise with its South Korean ally, including 17,500 U.S. troops and 50,000 South Korean soldiers.
- August 31: The U.S. flew two of its B-1B supersonic bombers over the Korean Peninsula. And U.S. bombers and stealth fighter jets joined South Korean fighter jets in “live fire exercises” that reportedly “simulated precision strikes” against targets in North Korea.
- September 5: The South Korean military—which has very close ties to the U.S. military—conducted more “live fire exercises” involving F-15 fighter jets and land-based ballistic missiles that simulated an attack on North Korean targets. South Korea’s presidential office also announced that the U.S. had agreed to remove warhead restrictions on South Korean missiles, which would allow them to develop more powerful weapons.
- All this is on top of the fact that the U.S. has been carrying out aggression, including nuclear blackmail, against North Korea in one form or another for the last 70 years. And all these threats from the country with the world’s biggest military and nuclear arsenal by far, a country fighting wars in at least five countries right now, the only country to have ever USED nukes, a country that killed three million Koreans during the 1950-53 Korean war! An imperialist power that is now bringing the world to the brink of a horrific war that could spiral into unimaginable death and destruction.
So who’s really threatening whom here? And who’s the world’s biggest warmonger—threatening the future of humanity? The USA, now headed by a fascist regime.
