Film Showing at Church Provokes Discussion and Debate:

“There was so much packed into the talk.”

March 19, 2018

From a reader:

This past weekend, a group of 17 of us gathered in the sanctuary of a local progressive church to watch BA’s film The Trump/Pence Regime MUST Go! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America. A Better World IS Possible.

About half the audience was from the church and the other half came off of Refuse Fascism building for the showing. There is social significance in the quality and breadth of people who came, as we learned from the comments and discussion after the showing.

In response to revcom’s call to show BA’s film to a wide circle of people in society, I made a cold call to this Christian church that has a history of anti-racism and pro-LGBT activism. It is also known for its philosophy of inclusion of different religions, sexual orientation, and progressive political perspectives. After hearing the contents on the film’s palm card, some church members volunteered to help organize the event...

Digging in, Deep and Wide, in an Immigrant Community

March 12, 2018

From a reader:

We did a showing of the film of the talk by Bob Avakian (BA), THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America, A Better World IS Possible, in a Caribbean immigrant community in Brooklyn. This was the third showing in this community, building off the two previous showings and work done to spread word about the film at a nearby college.

There was intense and serious discussion and struggle after the showing, with people wrestling with what BA said in the film. Everybody’s comments reflected a deep feeling that we are confronting a large and dangerous problem, and diverse views on why this is happening and what to do about it...

At the Revolution Club Organizing Center:

Watching the BA Film...and Getting Involved in Spreading It

February 19, 2018

Out and about, a postering team ran into a woman who was interested in the new talk by Bob Avakian, THE TRUMP/PENCE REGIME MUST GO! In The Name of Humanity, We REFUSE To Accept a Fascist America, A Better World IS Possible. She came down the block right into the Revolution Club Organizing Center and we learned, when introducing the paper, that she remembered getting it in the past but now relied heavily on coverage and analysis of what’s going on by watching the Young Turks. Then we got right into watching the full talk. At the end she clapped along with the clapping heard on the audio, smiling. When asked what she thought about it, she said BA gave such a detailed explanation of fascism. She liked that he used the facts to build the argument that this is fascism and how we ended up here. She said most people don’t know this is what it is. And she liked that BA also got into how we can do something about it. She also spoke about how she knew about slavery but not like that.

We told her about the month-long effort of really getting thousands to see the film and asked if she could contribute to making that happen herself. We talked about ways she could spread the film, including on social media, which she said was one way she keeps up on what’s going on and one way she could spread the film by posting the video, and she mentioned a spot right down the street that looked like a regular fast food joint and spoke of some professionals who eat lunch and hang out there sometimes; all as she gathered materials to spread the film herself, a copy of Revolution newspaper to learn more, and a calendar flyer about upcoming events, including more film showings at the center. When she left we made sure to have a way to stay in touch and that we would call soon to touch base and follow up.

Showing The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go... to Immigrants in NYC

February 9, 2018

A showing of the BA film was held at a small business in a largely immigrant community. This was the second showing at this business in recent weeks. It followed Trump having called Haiti, El Salvador, and Africa “shithole countries,” and after hundreds of Haitians and others marched across the Brooklyn Bridge and rallied on Wall Street to defiantly reject the Trump/Pence regime’s attacks on immigrants. People’s bitterness at these comments and attacks ran through the discussion following watching the film.

The discussion was very lively. One person said this film told the truth and people really needed to see it. He said people need to be educated about what was really going on, that this had to happen before they could be mobilized to do anything about it all, and this film could be part of giving them that necessary education. (This person took a lot of notes while watching the film, and he bought Bob Avakian’s book The New Communism, the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America, and the Revolutionary Communist Party Central Committee statement, “HOW WE CAN WIN—How We Can Really Make Revolution” before the showing.) Another person said it was necessary to mobilize a lot of people to take to the streets to stop the regime before it could cause more horrors for the people, but he felt it had been premature to set a specific date for people to start the demonstrations. Instead we should do it like Occupy (Occupy Wall Street) had done it—occupy somewhere, be in the street ongoing and build it up till you could reach the necessary stage.

Everyone was struck by the enormity of what we were up against, in the different ways they understood that. They saw the attacks on immigrants today as a dramatic escalation on an already horrible situation...

At a Meeting of an African Immigrant Organization in the Bronx

February 9, 2018

From a reader:

A woman in an African immigrant organization organized a screening of the film of BA’s talk The Trump/Pence Regime Must Go!... to a gathering of her organization in the Bronx. About 10 members of the group, along with their children, watched the film and many stayed for a lively engagement afterwards. Despite some technical issues with the sound system in their center, the depth of what this film provoked was striking.

There were four youths (between ages 9 and 11) who were old enough to participate in the discussion, and their questions were insightful and thought provoking. They shared their understanding of how Trump ran for president specifically “to do evil things to Black people” and how Trump’s presence is unleashing more violence against Black people. A particularly insightful girl expressed her agreement with the need to protest to get Trump out, but she asked: how do we build solutions for Black people “to be successful” in an America that doesn’t have a future for Black people and immigrants?

Among the nine or so adults who stayed for the discussion, some of the questions were: How does Trump’s immigration policy and stance towards the countries and peoples of the world really differ from that of previous administrations, with their deportations, bombings, and horrific wars?

People also expressed appreciation overall for BA and his thorough method of walking through the history that led to this regime’s ascendancy, including exposing some of how the U.S. has carried out its great crimes. One person expressed concerns about why this film, and Refuse Fascism, is not more known in the mainstream, and why don’t youth in society know about it and have not taken it up. They also wanted to know if it really would be possible to get Trump/Pence out without a revolution. These were challenging and important questions! Some argued for long-term “grassroots” work to educate people, and we struggled with them to confront the urgency of the situation.

People wanted to keep talking, even as it was time to lock the doors on the hall. People took Refuse Fascism stickers, posters, and material with them and some wanted to dig deeper into the vision of BA. One person bought a copy of Bob Avakian’s The New Communism and another got the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America, written by BA, and several got print issues of Revolution newspaper. Some hungered to continue what began at this screening and are exploring hosting follow-up screenings/discussions.

Showing Bob Avakian’s New Film in an African American Community

October 30, 2017

11 of us gathered in this small church in the African-American community. The showing was hosted and organized by the minister who strongly supports Refuse Fascism’s Call and was previously introduced to the work of Bob Avakian (BA). She saw this showing as an important opportunity to bring the importance of this battle to drive out the Trump/Pence regime out amongst her parishioners and friends, as well as those who come to her food pantry every week. … The film really struck a chord in people there.
