Heartbreaking scenes of genocide perpetrated by Israeli Zionism with the full support of U.S. imperialism shake us every day. This is an unbearable and completely unacceptable horror. Almost 38 thousand murdered already, with about 10 thousand more under the rubble, the vast majority of them defenseless people, especially children, women and the elderly, and the death toll rises every day. These are war crimes perpetrated by the Israeli army with bombs and weapons supplied in enormous quantities by the United States. The cities have been reduced to rubble, all the universities have been destroyed and, like the Nazis in the past, they even burned books. They cut off water, food and medicine to kill Palestinians by thirst, hunger, lack of medical care. They shoot down people who come to receive humanitarian aid. Humanitarian aid workers, like those from World Food Kitchen, are intentionally killed, who they murdered in cold blood on the route they had agreed upon when giving them permission to enter Gaza. They bomb and attack hospitals, schools, religious centers, and shelters. They run civilians from one place to another, to supposed “safe zones” where they are bombed, such as in the displaced persons encampment in Rafah with 45 dead, including children beheaded by the fire, among many other cases. They have imprisoned and tortured thousands of Palestinians without any charges. They purposely murder and expel journalists to hide their crimes against humanity from the world.
This is totally premeditated genocide, as Israel’s Prime Minister Netanyahu made clear by calling for “a holy war of annihilation” against the Palestinians and invoking the massacre of the Amalekites by the Israelites in the Bible: “You must remember what they did to the Amalekites, according to our sacred Bible. ‘Now go, attack the Amalekites and totally destroy all that belongs to them. Do not spare them; put to death men and women, children and infants, cattle and sheep, camels and donkeys.’” (La Jornada, October 10, 2023). Two weeks before the reactionary attack by Hamas on Israel, mainly on civilians, on October 7, 2023, Netanyahu presented at the UN maps in which “Greater Israel” encompassed the entire current Palestinian territory of Gaza and the West Bank, graphically demonstrating the goal of Zionism: to massacre, banish and subjugate Palestinians and other oppressed populations to increasingly expand the racist state of Jewish supremacy.
These inhuman crimes have sparked a massive, just and inspiring wave of protests around the world that the ruling classes in many countries have slandered and savagely repressed. At first, countries like France, Germany and the United Kingdom tried to make illegal any demonstration of support for the Palestinians, under the false argument that they were “anti-Semitic.” But they could not contain the angry demonstrations, especially by young people, against their governments’ support for Israel and its atrocities. At Columbia University in the United States, students established a peaceful protest encampment against the genocide that was brutally repressed by the police. This did not stop the young people, who set up the encampment again, despite multiple arrests, suspensions and expulsions from the university. These scenes set universities across the United States on fire, despite more than 3,000 arrests and brutal attacks by the police and some fascist mobs. From Gaza, several Palestinians showed the world tents, banners and cardboard with painted messages thanking these students for their support, and protests have spread around the world, generally with the typical repressive response from the authorities. In México as well, on May 28, the police attacked more than 300 demonstrators protesting in front of the Israeli embassy with teargas and fire extinguishers, fracturing the skull of a UNAM student and injuring a HispanTV journalist who was then hospitalized. This is another case of repression by the government that constantly declares “we do not repress,” while time after time they repress migrants, teachers, women, indigenous people, and many others. All this repression by the governments of the world against just, brave and mainly peaceful protests demonstrates once again the iron fist of the dictatorship of the ruling classes within the silk glove of phony democracy under the system of capitalism-imperialism.
Why do the government and the entire U.S. ruling class (both Democrats and fascist Republicans) strongly support this genocide if it is costing them the repudiation of billions of people around the world and in the U.S. itself, in addition to harming the chances of current President Joe Biden’s re-election? As Bob Avakian, revolutionary leader and architect of the New Communism, explains: “This is not because of ‘the power of the Jewish lobby’—or because of some ignorant, ridiculous and outrageous notion that ‘Jews are controlling everything.’ It is because Israel plays a ‘special role’ as a heavily armed bastion of support for U.S. imperialism in a strategically important part of the world (the ‘Middle East’). And Israel has been a key force in the commission of atrocities which have helped to maintain the oppressive rule of U.S. imperialism in many other parts of the world.” (revcom.us). As “Genocide Joe” Biden has said, “If Israel didn’t exist, America would have to invent it.” Due to its strategic location, oil and other factors, control of the Middle East is key for the U.S. empire in its rivalry with the Russian and Chinese imperialists and also to stifle the revolutionary potential of the region’s 450 million inhabitants, the majority kept in poverty by imperialist plunder and domination. That is why the U.S. has 30 military bases and 54 thousand soldiers in the region. And that is why Israel is so essential there, having unleashed four wars against nationalist regimes or regimes influenced by U.S. rivals, as well as countless armed aggressions in the region and attacks on revolutionary struggles. It has also served the interests of U.S. imperialism around the world, such as in the dirty war in Guatemala, the military dictatorship in Argentina and even in equipping the current and previous governments of México with Pegasus and other sophisticated software to spy on and attack journalists, critics, activists, environmentalists, revolutionaries, and other opponents.
The Zionist state of Israel is a monstrosity engendered by the capitalist-imperialist system and supported mainly by the U.S. The genocide in Gaza is not essentially a product of one or another government policy or of Netanyahu and Biden. It is fundamentally a product of the global capitalist-imperialist system, which commits endless atrocities, keeps the vast majority of humanity oppressed, impoverished and suffering needlessly, while driving us towards possible extinction with the intensified threats of a global nuclear war and the acceleration of the environmental crisis. It is necessary to broaden and intensify the protests against the genocide in Gaza, as well as against many other crimes of the system, contributing to prepare a real revolution in Palestine, the United States, México, and throughout the world. As Avakian emphasizes, “it is a scientific fact that we do not have to live this way.”
It is necessary to forge a revolutionary force in Palestine that fights for a secular revolutionary state throughout the historic territory of Palestine that guarantees justice and equal rights for Palestinians, Jews and other inhabitants. Israel is an illegitimate Jewish supremacist, racist state, established under the patronage of British and American imperialism through the Nakba (“catastrophe” in Arabic), a reign of terror in 1948 in which Zionists raped, tortured and massacred many, with at least 31 documented massacres, and expelled nearly one million Palestinians from their homes and lands, devastating their villages. The imperialist “two-state” proposal, in which a Palestinian mini-state would be completely dominated and subjugated by Israel, is a hypocritical mockery. The solution is not to expel or kill the Jews either. The problem is Zionism and imperialism, not the Jews. In fact, many Jews have played an important role in the protests against the genocide, declaring, “Not in our name” and that the true lesson of the Nazi Holocaust that exterminated six million Jews is that there must never again be a genocide against anyone. Hamas is a reactionary organization that dreams of an Islamic fundamentalist theocratic state like Iran, where women are imprisoned and killed for not covering their hair properly, and people are executed for protesting against the regime. In fact, Netanyahu has supported Hamas in order to weaken secular Palestinian forces, telling members of his ruling Likud party: “Whoever wants to thwart the establishment of a Palestinian state has to support strengthening Hamas and transferring money to Hamas.” (BBC).
The only solution is a real revolution that gets rid of the system that is the source of so many horrors. In Palestine it is necessary to forge a revolutionary force that establishes a revolutionary, secular and unified Palestinian state. In the United States, Bob Avakian and the “revcoms” are fighting for revolution, taking advantage of the political crisis between the warmongering Democrats and the fascist Republicans, declaring, “Neither fascist Trump nor Genocide Joe, the whole system has to go.” In México, the Revolutionary Communist Organization, México, and the Revolution Movement are struggling to forge a communist force to lead the revolution, and we join with others to expose and demand an end to the crimes of this system, from Gaza to Ayotzinapa, raising the slogan of the New Communism, “Revolution, Nothing Less.” Get in touch and join the fight against the genocide in Gaza and for the emancipation of humanity.
