Anas Al-Sharif, the most prominent living journalist in Gaza for Al Jazeera Arabic, was targeted and murdered by Israel along with four colleagues.
Anas and his colleagues were killed in a deliberate strike on a tent housing journalists in Gaza City. This comes two days after Israel announced a new military escalation to seize Gaza City and then all of Gaza.
Seven people in all were killed in the attack the night of August 10, including Al Jazeera correspondent Mohammed Qreiqeh and camera operators Ibrahim Zaher, Mohammed Noufal and Moamen Aliwa.
Forty minutes before he was killed, the 28-year-old Anas posted this challenge on social media:
The occupation is now openly threatening a full-scale invasion of Gaza.
For 22 months, the city has been bleeding under relentless bombardment from land, sea, and air.
Tens of thousands have been killed, and hundreds of thousands wounded.
If this madness does not end, Gaza will be reduced to ruins, its people’s voices silenced, their faces erased — and history will remember you as silent witnesses to a genocide you chose not to stop.
Please share this message and tag everyone who has the power to help end this massacre. Silence is complicity.
Anas leaves a wife, son, and daughter behind.
Anas was repeatedly threatened by the Israeli military, behind the lie he was a Hamas member. One of his colleagues stated that the real reason the reporters were killed was “because of their relentless reporting on the starvation and the famine and the malnutrition” in Gaza, and “because they’re bringing the truth of this crime to everyone.”
Israel has killed more than 200 reporters and media workers since October 7, 2023 and blocked all international reporters from entering Gaza. This in an attempt to prevent the world from learning about and documenting its barbaric crimes against the Palestinian people.
In the face of that violent and deadly repression, Anas courageously and selflessly exposed the truth of Israel's crimes.
