July 17 saw a national day of protest to declare that "Good Trouble Lives On.” This was the fifth anniversary of the death of John Lewis, a congressman who became well known as a civil rights leader when he was young. This was called for by a broad coalition of organizations. On their site, they wrote: "We are facing the most brazen rollback of civil rights in generations. Whether you're outraged by attacks on voting rights, the gutting of essential services, disappearances of our neighbors, or the assault on free speech and our right to protest—this movement is for you."
Across the country, protests took place in over 1600 cities with many thousands taking part. These were important in maintaining the momentum of outrage and anger at the moves of Trump MAGA Fascism. And there were important actions that took place across the country, including from RefuseFascism.org
However, to speak frankly, there are millions more who hate this fascism who were not in the streets. This needs to change—now. Uniting with, and learning from, what did manifest, the protests to defeat Trump MAGA fascism urgently need to grow. As we wrote last week:
We face an emergency situation. The rapidly accelerating times demand that all those who oppose this fascism change how we are thinking and how we are acting—NOW. We need to reach out to others, to work and plan together to rapidly take concrete steps toward creating the situation described above.
This resistance must be built so that people see it as explicitly linked to and pointing the way towards bringing about the level of massive noncompliance and nonviolent resistance necessary to bring the machinery of the fascist regime to a halt until the regime is removed from power. In other words, the demand “The Trump Fascist Regime Must Go—NOW!” must become a concrete, immediate mission."
On this page are sights and sounds from around the country of the July 17 actions. Of particular note, in occupied Los Angeles, Refuse Fascism joined with others to do a human installation called “The Disappeared/Los Desaparecidos”—a reenactment of the torture being carried out at the CECOT concentration camp in El Salvador on immigrants sent there from the U.S. by Trump. This installation was taken up by RefuseFascism.org across the country and added a powerful reminder of some of what we're fighting against, and some of who we're fighting for.

New York, protesters engage in civil disobedience following a mass march at NYC's Federal Plaza, where ICE arrests and deports migrant New Yorkers coming out of court hearings. Chanting "Sit back down" and "Free them all," the group encouraged marchers to continue to block the intersection that ICE uses to transport kidnapped immigrants. July 17, 2025.
