Seeds and Shoots of Revolution—Fundraising for the Revcoms on International May 1 at Revolution Books NYC

On May 1, Revolution Books (RB) in New York City hosted an Internationalist Revolutionary Celebration. A group of older, retired Black people who come out of the 1960s struggles of Black folk in the U.S. came together to take responsibility for an inspiring fundraiser for May 1. In different ways, they all are looking to and want to see a revolution happen here. They are RB supporters who have been especially active around various fundraising projects over the past several years, especially cooking food, for RB and the movement for revolution.

I’m a retired teachers’ aide who made a $20 donation to the $100,000 fund drive.  After watching Andy Zee’s May 1st editorial on The RNL Show, I wanted to contribute to a brighter future.  I’ve donated before to the revcoms because funds are necessary to keep the work going.

Now for the $25,000 challenge, I got some more shirts that say Forced Motherhood is Female Enslavement to raise funds.  I was helping a friend with his yard sale, so I brought the shirts there.  I met several people who were very interested but didn’t buy any, and also got a lecture from a woman who said, “Don’t you know that aborted fetuses are used for medical purposes?”.  I said I didn’t, and later talked to a friend who told me about these lies from the Christian fascist anti-abortion crowd.  The woman had also said that we females know what to do not to get pregnant, so I knew she wasn’t in favor of women being full human beings.  I pointed out to her that most women who want abortions already have kids.

Next I took the shirts to my neighborhood Trader Joe’s where I figured there would be interest.  In just an hour I sold 3 shirts @ $20 each, and got a $20 donation from a woman who didn’t want a shirt but wanted to know what the funds were for.  I told her it’s for women’s rights and for revolution, and handed her (and the others) the May 1st flyer.

Another day I joined a team at the huge annual book fair in town, and though I thought the crowd was kind of conservative, I sold another shirt, plus got two $10 donations from men and a $3 donation from a young woman.  I also ran into a Jehovah’s Witness who told me how in the bible abortion is not acceptable.  I told her I’m a Buddhist and that’s about cause and effect.

I’d like to challenge everyone to grab some of these important conversation-starting shirts to raise funds and to spread the word.  Now I’m thinking of going to some bus stops in front of schools to reach young people who need to be part of this.

Greetings,

With International Workers Day (May 1) fast approaching, it is clear that the revolutionary and progressive forces must come together to expedite radical change in this country.

It is abundantly obvious that continuing to hope that we can somehow bring about change through working within the system will do nothing but prolong the hopeless illusion.

This system is a gangrene on the people of the world. We who live here have a responsibility to excise the poison so that everyone who suffers can benefit.

As 2022 and 2023 have shown, the forces of oppression are doing just that – enacting laws and policies to further try to legitimize their fascist agenda. To carry out their war on women, LGBTQ+, and people of color. They are demonizing everyone that stands in the way of their white supremacist, misogynist, and genocidal policies.

My wife and I contribute to RevCom on a pretty regular basis. We wish we could give more because we believe it is our responsibility to help bring about change.

I call on others who donate periodically to become contributors on a regular basis. The more we can fund this revolutionary movement and inspire others, the quicker we can bring about the end of this regime. The system is a sick cancer on the people of the world and the responsibility we have here gives us a special role.

Onward to May 1!

This is a challenge to become part of putting revolution on the map by matching our $1,000 contribution to the May Day 2023 $25,000 fund drive.

These times are a moment we have been looking to and working toward for years. A rare time when revolution becomes more possible. A time that calls for breaking out of the darkness and putting revolution on the map. And May Day 2023 is the occasion, the time to step up the effort to bring forward thousands and then millions to take up the cause of preparing for revolution. To do this, we need big funds to get the “game changing,” interview with Bob Avakian on the RNL Show seen by millions, to support and promote the RNL Show, and to expand the coverage and impact of revcom.us. Just imagine what putting revolution on the map here in the belly of the beast, and actually making revolution, would mean for billions worldwide.

We are truly inspired by the revcoms who are struggling with people to see how the problems of this system cannot be resolved by reforming this system. And people from all walks of life who hate the way things are and long for a way out of this madness need to join in the movement for revolution in many ways including donating and raising funds.

There IS a better world free of oppression and exploitation we can fight for and bring into being. Revolution is the hope of the hopeless.

All this takes support… and those who are contributing to making this challenge are wholeheartedly throwing into this effort. Every dollar up to $1,000 that is donated will be doubled. Join us!

Cleveland: Spreading the message of May 1 among people hoping for a better world but not knowing their hopes really can become reality!

A few supporters of the revcoms in Cleveland raised $360 for the May 1st fund drive yesterday selling cake slices, brownies, and cookies at small businesses in strip malls.... We had been to many of the same shops before and many remembered learning about the RNL Show. They were glad to see us again and glad to be reminded to watch the RNL Show.  Those who had asked us to leave flyers for the $100,000 drive were all out and wanted May 1st flyers.

A few supporters of the revcoms in Cleveland raised $360 for the May 1st fund drive yesterday selling cake slices, brownies, and cookies at small businesses in strip malls. This is a desperately poor, largely Black city. Throughout the Black community there are small strip malls where lots of people have individual shops or stalls in a shared shop to do braiding, haircuts or nails together with smoke shops, phone stores, and small clothing stores. It’s one of the ways people have found to support their families since steel and auto industries basically left. About one-third of them have crosses and Bible quotes featured on the walls. We canvassed a lot of them, 30 or 40. We had been to many of the same shops before and many remembered learning about the RNL Show. They were glad to see us again and glad to be reminded to watch the RNL Show.  Those who had asked us to leave flyers for the $100,000 drive were all out and wanted May 1st flyers.

There’s a lot of general attraction to the need for revolution—people expressing a deep sense of anger and frustration that this society is just not working, that despite all the protests, Black people are still being killed by the police and the kids are killing each other, even as many are still stuck in looking to the system itself or to God to try to fix things. Knowing as we do, that it is this system, founded on white supremacy and the exploitation of people all over the planet, that is the source of all this horrific oppression people face, we brought out how the system cannot be reformed. We need revolution to defeat this whole system and replace it with one that is about ending all oppression and exploitation. That’s why Revolutionary May 1st is so importantit’s about letting people know that a force is being organized to make this revolution and we are asking people to contribute and be part of that. On this basis, a number of people who were reluctant at first bought baked goods and made plans to watch the RNL Show.

A few people didn’t want pastries because they are diabetic, but contributed saying something like “For revolution? We surely need one!” Others are more consciously looking for an actual revolution: “I managed to get myself out of the projects, found a job that I could live on. But lots of people still stuck killing each other! Over colors! I’ve seen how the cops stop every effort for a gang truce and target anybody who gets it together. Me and my friends talk about how we could change all this. But we can’t figure out a way to win. I’m gonna try to get them together to watch this show!”

We raised a lot more money in one day this time. A lot of the reason was one guy in a bar who liked the announcement for May Day but didn’t say much. The bartenders introduced us as soon as we asked if it was OK to sell things there. He bought $130 worth of pastries, gave them to everybody in the bar and asked us to come back every monthwhich we will! We stayed and talked with people there for a few minutes. A good minority asked for flyers and palm cards.

All these people hoping for a better world but not knowing their hopes really can become reality!  In thinking about how to increase the numbers who actually go to the RNL Show—and in this way start learning about and becoming part of the revolutionwe plan to poster outside all these areas for both May First and the RNL Show, as well as get back to those who gave us their phone numbers.

RE: REVCOM.US INTERNATIONAL MAY DAY CALL TO ACTION FOR REVOLUTION
Why we need to educate ourselves and organize for an actual revolution NOW!

From a biology tutor:

.... That is why we go in the streets at rallies this International May Day. Make a donation, educate yourselves and read the new plan that Bob Avakian wrote about how we can organize for revolution, by watching The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show on YouTube, and by going to the website revcom.us. It is a plan that will work and needs to be organized for NOW!!

Look at the weather patterns you see where you live. In a small southwest suburb of Chicago the other day we had two to three inch hail and strong winds and lightning and a tornado warning. This week we got 80 degree temperatures and this Sunday they expect snow. I have never experienced something so intense in the Midwest which is mild compared to other parts of the country. We do not have time to waste. The weather patterns are going to get even more intense and threaten our own survival. If we do not go solar and wind power everywhere and stop burning fossil fuels so that big oil companies can squeeze the last bit of profit from this planet. Everyone should have had electric cars long ago at a price they could afford. The planet is going to implode and meanwhile we are giving tax credits for solar power and electric cars. Come on people, we need to overthrow this system for profits now before we are gone.

Meanwhile, in Texas a rogue fascist judge says the FDA was wrong in approving the abortion pill with ten years of hundreds of scientific studies that deemed it very safe, all because this judge gets his information from a blog and rules on it. He says his ruling must be enforced in all 50 states based on a blog. Meanwhile Biden wants it to go to the fascist Supreme Court to be given more time for review. Call it what it is: B..shit. This judge should be carried out of his court in his chair like the Montgomery Ward executive was and then replaced instantly when he defied the War Department ordered by the President of the U.S. at the time of the Second World War. Come on people, the system is broke and needs to be replaced NOW!!

Working on challenging and organizing people—fundraising plan from a Midwest city

Since the call to raise $25,000 for May 1st was issued, I've done a lot of calling to people who see themselves as supporters of the revcoms digging into why raising funds this month will make a huge difference to making the May 1st events impact millions with the message that a force is gathering for real revolution. Both the May 1st editorial and the fundraising flyer are great in walking people through thisespecially the point in the flyer which says: Your funds will enable these demonstrations to happen—and more than that, they will be part of making this force and the alternative it represents known to millions.” There has been a lot of struggle involved in most of these conversationsit's definitely not where people go on autopilot.

The article this week about the expelling of the Black legislators in Tennessee helps a lot tootalking about the “sharp clashing divides among the rulers, the tearing apart of this system and its ruling institutions” which provide an opening for a real revolution. I have also been encouraging thinking about how we go to folks using the "Challenging and Changing" model.

We are postering neighborhoods where we have been taking out the bake sales and food sales for the $100,000 fund drive—and calling on others to take up the postering too.

We're making a lot of calls and texts—reaching out to people we have met fairly recently and paying some particular attention to middle class folks since most others don't have much money till the first of the month. We’ve been sending people the Call for May 1st and the fundraising flyer and/or the RNL Show clip featuring Andy Zee’s challenge for people to come out on May 1st. The aim is to connect by phone, win contributions and where possible unleash others to raise funds—as well as hoping that some will just respond on their own.

We're also going back to some of the small businesses that have been most interested with posters, flyers, palm cards, and selling T-shirts calling for contributions. There are two or three among them where there is a real possibility of managers raising funds from among patrons.

The weather has broken here at least for this week or so. There is more basis for T-shirt sales and we plan to take them (along with flyers, etc.) out at the Women’s March, an ʼ80s R&B concert and a Reggae show this weekend, and also a protest called by the most radical Palestinian organization here.

The weekend of April 22 is Earth Day. There are concerts and other very mainstream events happening. We are probably going broadly to some of them with a big, inflated globe in flames maybe with a mushroom cloud, posters, etc. and possibly with the American Crime display (which we are working on figuring out how to print) challenging people to contribute to May 1st because we don't have to accept this system’s future. There is also the possibility we can sell either baked goods decorated with a burning globe, bottled water and/or baby plants as part of this.

Making the substance of the May 1st editorial the common property and foundation for building for the holiday

In developing our plans for May 1st, we started with a discussion of the May 1st editorial, and plans to make the substance of it the common property of, and foundation for, all those who will be building for it—supporters as well as new people we meet. All of this is taking place in the midst of sharpening contradictions, and we talked about the need to lead with May 1st (its politics and goals) in acting on themwhether it be the intensifying crisis at the border or the accelerating war on women with the Mifepristone ban, just to name a couple. Not only is a better world possible, there is a force, the revcoms, preparing to seize on this rare time, and organizing now to make revolution—people need to be challenged to join with that to put revolution on the map.

Our plans center on the eve of May 1st, April 30, when we are planning a fundraising picnic with a similar vision of the idea spoken to in the May 1st editorial (“One idea for May 1st is to hold dinners the week before which can be festive occasions that raise money, build community and develop consciousness.”). This would both culminate the weeks of outreach, struggle and fundraising leading into May 1st as well as solidify a force to go out on May 1st itself to broadly take out, through banners and flyers, the message from the revcoms.

We envision the picnic to be festive, and politically compelling. This would include showing different clips from the BA interviews and others, along with playing music and music videos that capture both the stakes and the possibilities for a better world for all of humanity. And there will be fundraising. We are tossing around different ideas for fundraising at the picnic—donating to take the Texas and American crimes quizzes, having people donate to stand on the American and Russian flags, or donate to take a swing at a pinata.

Leading up to May 1st, we have plans for various forms of fundraising and mass distribution of the May Day flyer. This would include broad flyering at public events and on the streets, setting up tables at spring festivals to sell T-shirts and other things, and building on the advances we made during the $100,000 fund drive with people in the local stores who actively took up the fund drive. Plans are to both further develop the work at stores where people have donated, as well as to broaden out into the neighborhoods beyond where this work has been done. An important element of this will be getting out the May 1st editorial to donors, challenging people around its content and motivating them to become more active in putting revolution on the map.  Along with the May 1st flyer, there will be popularization of the Points of Attention which is important in its own right as well as building awareness of the Revolution Clubs. There are also plans for getting out to the street corners with large banners or signs with the May 1st slogans to get out the flyer and raise money. Along with all of that, some of the sustainers are working on developing collective projects that they can take up. One idea so far is for a bake sale.

As part of the process of bringing people together to contribute to the movement to put revolution on the map, we want to prepare a banner with the main slogan on it and take it out broadly for people to write messages to the revcoms on it, and then send the banner to the Revolution Tour in LA. We also will be working to pull together a temporary ad hoc May Day committee including new people we meet to further develop plans, and reach out and raise money for May 1st. If we can pull it together, their first meeting will be discussing the May 1st editorial and developing plans on that basis.

A $1,000 match challenge from four retirees from Hawai`i:

“We’ve dreamed of revolution for decades and now, when we see the possibilities unfolding, health and distance limits what we can do. However, the courageous young revolutionary leaders we see on the RNL show give us hope. We challenge you to join us in raising $25,000 to expand their work and put revolution on the map.”

DONATE to the revolution.

From the genocide in Gaza, to the growing threat of world war between nuclear powers, to escalating environmental devastation… the capitalist-imperialist system ruling over us is a horror for billions around the world and is tearing up the fabric of life on earth. Now the all-out battle within the U.S. ruling class, between fascist Republicans and war criminal Democrats, is coming to a head—likely during, or before, the coming elections—ripping society apart unlike anything since the Civil War.

Bob Avakian (BA), revolutionary leader and author of the new communism, has developed a strategy to prepare for and make revolution. He’s scientifically analyzed that this is a rare time when an actual revolution has become more possible, and has laid out the sweeping vision, solid foundation and concrete blueprint for “what comes next,” in the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America

The website revcom.us follows and applies that leadership and is essential to all this. We post new materials from BA and curate his whole body of work. We apply the science he’s developed to analyze and expose every key event in society, every week. Revcom.us posts BA’s timely leadership for the revcoms (revolutionary communists), including his social media posts which break this down for people every week and sometimes more. We act as a guiding and connecting hub for the growing revcom movement nationwide: not just showing what’s being done, but going into what’s right and what’s wrong and rapidly learning—and recruiting new people into what has to be a rapidly growing force.

Put it this way: there will be no revolution unless this website not only “keeps going” but goes up to a whole different level!

So what should you give to make 2024 our year—a year of revolution?
Everything you possibly can!
DONATE NOW to revcom.us and get with BA and the revcoms!

Your donations contribute to:

  • Promotion of BA on social media and the Bob Avakian Interviews on The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show
  • Strengthen revcom.us as an accessible, secure, robust website able to rise to the challenge of meeting the extraordinary demands of navigating the storms and preparing for revolution in this pivotal, unprecedented year
  • Fund revcoms to travel to national “hotspots,” where extreme contradictions are pulling apart the fabric of this country and creating the possibility of wrenching an actual revolution out of this intensifying situation
  • Expand the reach and coverage of revcom.us
  • Printing and distribution of key Revcom materials including the Declaration and Proclamation
