On Monday, April 14, Trump met in the White House with fellow fascist Nayib Bukele, president of El Salvador. Trump’s government paid El Salvador six million dollars to hold several hundred Venezuelan migrants in Bukele’s “mega-prison”/concentration camp, CECOT. In the course of their friendly chatting about the suffering this inflicts on Venezuelans, Trump said, “Home-growns are next. The home-growns. You gotta build about five more places. You’ve got space [loud laughter in room]. It’s not big enough.” And Bukele says “Yeah, we’ve got space. (By “home-growns,” Trump means U.S.-born people.)
Since then, Trump, as well as his press secretary, Karoline Leavitt, Elon Musk and other fascists have continued to kick this idea around in public and private.
Keep in mind that CECOT prison is way beyond the routine level of abuse and torture that is already meted out in U.S. prisons. Dozens are crammed into a single cell, with no mattresses, no sheets, no eating utensils, little food, and no privacy. No books, no rehabilitation or educational programs (other than Bible study!), no family or attorney visits, no phone calls or virtual meetings. No time outdoors (they get 30 minutes of indoor exercise.) Punishment can (officially) involve solitary confinement in a completely dark hole in the ground with only an airhole, for up to 15 days.
CECOT holds 40,000 prisoners. The five more Trump requested for “some really bad people” would mean that he wants the ability to subject 200,000 people to this torture.
Who will get sent to these duplicate CECOTs? No doubt Trump will send some of the already-incarcerated 2 million people in the U.S. down there. They will be used as an example to terrorize the prisoners who remain.
But note well the words of Trump’s senior director for combatting terrorism, Sebastian Gorka, about people who support the struggle to bring Kilmar Abrego Garcia home from the Salvadoran prison he is in. Gorka muses: are they “on the side of the cartel members, on the side of the illegal aliens, on the side of the terrorists.… And you have to ask yourself, are they technically aiding, and abetting them? Because aiding and abetting criminals and terrorists is a crime in federal statute.”
And note well that Trump and his minions have continued to threaten those who even protest at a Tesla showroom with this fate.1
We’ll end this by once again quoting Bob Avakian’s trenchant point:
Things are moving fast—the fascists in power are determined to quickly overwhelm, divide, crush and demoralize all those who would stand up against them.
Every decent person, in rapidly growing numbers, needs to be mobilized, and to mobilize others, quickly becoming millions rising up, united in their determination to bring about a political situation where this regime can no longer remain in power. (from social media message REVOLUTION #113, The Trump MAGA fascists would have been on the side of the Confederacy in the Civil War, fighting to maintain, and expand, slavery.”)
