One Year of MAGA Fascism:

Accelerating Climate Catastrophe and Assaulting the Planet

Trump Must Go Now!

Trump screeched before the UN in October: “This ‘climate change’ is the greatest con job ever perpetrated on the world…” He not only denied firmly established scientific FACT, but cast scientists and those who care about the future of the planet as enemies.

Trump, with nuclear blast

Over the last year, Trump/MAGA fascism has been remaking the U.S. government in many fascist dimensions, including in the realm of environmental policy: 1) tearing down all barriers to the burning of fossil fuels, which causes climate change, and 2) and setting out to defund, undermine and discredit, and ultimately destroy climate science and the work of climate scientists that reveal the truth about global warming and what must be urgently done. And the science is very clear, based firmly on decades of painstaking global research and massive and unmistakable evidence: to stop climate change, we must massively cut the burning of fossil fuel. Now.

Trump aims to destroy efforts to curb climate change not only in the U.S. but globally. In early January, Trump officially withdrew the U.S. from the main international climate agreement that has been signed onto by almost every country and has been in place for 34 years. 1  He also cut ties with 65 international organizations that protect the environment, including the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC)—the main body that coordinates scientific information and analysis about the climate worldwide—and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), which was formed in 1948 and plays an important role in preventing extinction of endangered species. Trump argues that these organizations “no longer serve American interests,” which, translated into English from Trump-speak, means: America #1 and FUCK the survival of human beings on the planet and FUCK the natural world!

This savage attack on the environment and all global efforts to deal with the climate crisis is one important part of the fascist onslaught that the revolutionary leader, Bob Avakian, wrote about in social media message REVOLUTION #114 months ago:

Trump fascism is a regime that openly and aggressively strips away basic rights and blatantly declares that there is no rule of law and due process of law other than what it dictates, and that raw destructive power is what must rule in the international arena, without even the pretense of adherence to international law or concern about the sovereignty, or even the right to exist, of less powerful peoples and countries.

The last three years—2023, 2024 and 2025—have been the hottest three years for our planet in the history of human civilization. The average global surface temperature over this period was more than 1.48 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) above what it was before the capitalist industrial revolution of the 19th century led to the massive burning of coal, oil, and gas. And temperatures continue to rise. For over ten years, scientists have identified 1.5 degrees as the threshold that must not be crossed if the planet was to avoid much more severe catastrophes.

Far from slowing down, the destruction of the climate is accelerating. A recent report from the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) found that the amount of CO2 (carbon dioxide, the gas that is the main contributor to climate change) increased more than any other year on record and is now greater than it has been at any time in the past 800,000 years. Global temperatures and sea levels are rising much faster than they have in recent decades.

This is affecting nature and society in important ways. For just one example, global warming has heated up the ocean, and the ocean temperature now is too hot for coral reefs to survive for long. A coral reef is like a living underwater city made by tiny animals. Over many years, they build hard skeletons that pile up into beautiful and colorful structures, creating a home for fish, plants, and many other sea creatures. In addition to the natural wonder of these coral reefs, the livelihoods of hundreds of millions of people rely on fish that depend on them.

One recent report on the state of the Earth’s climate concluded, “Humanity faces a potentially catastrophic, irreversible outcome.”

Look at what this fascist regime has done in just one year:

  • Trump has made expanding fossil fuels a central pillar of his administration. He made this the top priority of the Environmental Protection Agency. Trump opened up massive federal lands to drilling, including the pristine and fragile Alaskan wilderness. He increased subsidies for fossil fuels by $40 billion.
  • Trump fascism has systematically removed references to anything related to climate change from multiple government websites. Even more worrying is Trump’s removal of a vast amount of climate-related information crucial to climate research. A video produced by Project 2025 to train the Trump administration in staffing agencies said that the government needs to “eradicate climate change references from absolutely everywhere.”
  • The U.S. did not send an official delegation to the annual United Nations climate talks last November. While these climate talks are more of a political charade than dealing meaningfully with the climate catastrophe, the fact that the regime boycotted these talks is a reflection of their open calls to plunder the planet, at any cost. Plus, the U.S. is the country that historically is most responsible for the planet’s warming and that leads the world in oil and gas production. The representative of the Pacific island nation of Tuvalu—which faces imminent disaster as sea levels rise due to global warming—said that in failing to attend, the U.S. was showing a “shameful disregard for the rest of the world.”
  • In Trump’s second term, he has started to undo major scientific institutions. For example, in December, the Trump administration announced a plan to dismantle the National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCAR) in Boulder, Colorado, one of the world’s premier climate and weather science institutions. Dr. Brandon Jones, president of the American Geophysical Union, said that closing the Center “is a fundamental disruption of the systems that allow science in this country to function.”
  • Trump has also put anti-scientific lunatics and political hacks who report to the White House in charge of approving federal grants for scientific research. Previously this review was conducted by scientists.
  • The Trump regime has overturned the scientifically based finding that climate change endangers health, which was the legal basis for government regulation of greenhouse gas emissions that cause climate change. Trump fired hundreds of scientists working on the National Climate Assessment, the main U.S. report on what is happening with climate change.

MAGA Fascism Accelerates the Capitalist-Imperialist System’s Rush to Climate Catastrophe

The capitalist-imperialist system has burned fossil fuels over many, many decades to the point where planet Earth is so hot that every fraction of a degree of additional warming increases the grave danger. This is a system based on exploitation... a system driven by the competitive pursuit of profit and more profit... that treats nature as a “cost-free” input to serve the ever-expanding drive for profit and control over markets, regions, and resources. Humanity and the planet be damned!

And, again, it is the USA that has been the #1 climate destroyer historically. With the rise of Trump fascism, we have a regime with a lunatic hatred of science, a worship of fossil fuels, and a fanatical desire for profits and global domination by any means. A key part of Trump’s fascist regime are the Christian fascists, whose literal reading of the bible calls on them to seek complete dominion over the planet to serve what they believe is the imminent return of Christ, and who are taught that global warming is an anti-Christian, manufactured crisis.

In 2025: A New Year—Profound New Challenges—And a Profoundly Positive Way Forward in the Face of Very Real Horror, Bob Avakian spoke to how Trump/MAGA fascism emerges out of the underlying system and accelerates its horrors:

The Trump/MAGA fascism that is now moving to take power, having arisen out of the soil of this whole system (and the whole history of this country), will unleash all this horror more fully and in more blatant ways, while at the same time the basic nature and dynamics of this system as a whole are subjecting the masses of humanity to terrible suffering, destroying the environment at an accelerating rate and heightening the danger of all-out war between the U.S. and its rivals in Russia and China—all nuclear-armed imperialist powers.”

We are at a crucial turning point for humanity and the planet. This system has already superheated the Earth and pushed us to the brink of cascading, irreversible climate disasters. Trump/MAGA fascism has now taken power in the most powerful imperialist country in the world—the single greatest historical contributor to global climate destruction—and is accelerating the drive toward catastrophe, and even the danger of human extinction. This fascist regime is invading countries, gunning down protesters, placing itself above international law, and dragging humanity and nature toward the abyss. Even one more day of this is intolerable.

But there IS a way out. Trump/MAGA fascism can and must be defeated through the massive, sustained, nonviolent struggle of millions of people acting together with determination and courage. And in and through the struggle to defeat fascism, there must be a deep-going reckoning and search for answers to the burning questions: How did we get here? What is it about this system that repeatedly produces fascism, war, oppression, and environmental devastation? And what would it take to bring into being a society that makes protecting the planet—and the emancipation of humanity as a whole—a highest priority? A radically different future is possible. Through a real revolution, a new society could be established that is organized to meet human needs sustainably and to repair, as much as possible, the damage already done to the Earth.

That vision is not a vague hope. We are in a rare time when this revolution is more possible. And the vision for a whole new system to be put in place of this one is concretely laid out in the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America, authored by Bob Avakian, which provides a framework for a society that puts the survival of the planet, internationalism, and the flourishing of humanity at its core. There are answers, and there is a way forward in the works of Bob Avakian and the revcoms—and there is no more urgent time to explore and act on those answers. To begin, start herehere, and here

A Year of Intensifying Disasters

Like recent years, 2025 saw intensifying disasters fueled by a warming planet. Extreme heat, deadly flooding, wildfires, stronger storms, and droughts are part of the new reality the planet faces as temperatures rise. These disasters are now engulfing the entire planet but hit hardest on the poorest countries, those least responsible for the changing climate.

In late November, Cyclone Senyar and Cyclone Ditwah devastated large parts of Sri Lanka, Indonesia, Malaysia and Thailand. The storms were “supercharged” by higher sea temperatures and made worse by rapid deforestation and poverty caused by capitalism-imperialism. In Indonesia alone, at least 1,177 people were killed and 1.1 million were displaced. The storm killed a significant number of the critically endangered Tapanuli orangutan which biologists said the storm could be an extinction level event.

During August and September, monsoons turned deadly in Pakistan. More than 4,000 villages were under water, 1,000 people were killed and 2.5 million were evacuated. In 2022 an even more deadly monsoon left more than one third of the country underwater. Some models predict extreme daily rainfall in the region will become up to 50 percent more intense as temperatures rise.

Other climate-related disasters in 2025 included deadly flooding that killed more than 500 in Nigeria and more than 100 in South Africa and more than 55 in Bolivia. Fires in Los Angeles were the largest in the city’s history, killing more than 30 people, destroying more than 16,000 homes and forcing 200,000 people to evacuate. A report in a major medical journal found that the number killed in these fires could be in the hundreds if factors such as smoke inhalation are included.

We are at a turning point in history. The capitalist-imperialist system is a horror for billions of people here and around the world and threatening the very fabric of life on earth. Now the election of fascist Trump poses even more extreme dangers for humanity—and underscores the total illegitimacy of this system, and the urgent need for a radically different system.

The website Revcom.us follows the revolutionary leadership of Bob Avakian (BA), the author of the new communism. Bob Avakian has scientifically analyzed that we are in a rare time when an actual revolution has become more possible in the U.S. He’s charted a strategy for making that revolution, and laid out a sweeping vision and concrete blueprint for “what comes next” in the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America.

Revcom.us projects BA’s voice, leadership, and vision throughout society. It posts his timely leadership for the revcoms (revolutionary communists) and the whole movement for revolution, including his social media posts, and curates his whole body of work.

Our website applies the scientific approach BA has developed to analyze major events in society and the world—why they are happening, how they relate to each other, how all this relates to the system we live under, where people's interests lie, how revolution is in fact the solution to all this, and what the goals of that revolution are.

Revcom.us acts as a guiding and connecting hub for the revcom movement nationwide: showing what’s being done, digging into what’s right and what’s wrong, and rapidly learning—and recruiting new people into what has to be a rapidly growing force. As part of this, revcom.us feature and promotes the weekly The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show on YouTube.com.

Put it this way: there will be no revolution unless this website not only “keeps going” but rises to a whole different level!
