On November 2, Senator Elizabeth Warren and other Democratic senators and congresspeople issued a letter calling on President Biden to rescind Medals of Honor awarded to soldiers who participated in the Wounded Knee Massacre.
Read the accompanying article from the revcom.us American Crime series on what actually did happen at the Wounded Knee massacre. Read the other American Crime articles that detail similar slaughters of Native peoples here and people around the world who resist American domination. Now think about what it means that even now, over 100 years later, those who rule this country continue to uphold these killers with its “highest honor.”
But here’s the kicker. Those congresspeople who have gotten behind this particular effort hasten to say that “Those listed on the Medal of Honor Roll have come to exemplify the best traits of members of the Armed Forces, a long and proud lineage of those who went beyond the call of service to the United States of America.”
Say what? Again, think about the American Crime articles, ranging around the world. No, this attempt to somehow separate those who won medals for massacring people at Wounded Knee from their brothers (and now sisters) in arms won’t wash.
“Long and proud lineage.” No. These killers are not exceptions but in fact fit perfectly into a lineage that is not “proud” at all but instead is shameful beyond compare, and that has gone on way too long already.
A Declaration, A Call To Get Organized Now For A Real Revolution puts it this way:
The military of this country is not carrying out an “honorable service”—and it is not some “bad ass” force that people should respect. It is doing the same thing around the world, on a massive scale, that the police are doing here: carrying out the cowardly killing and terrorizing of people in the service of the biggest oppressors in the world, the rulers of this country. And it is a major cause of the destruction of the environment.
