Thursday April 14, RiseUp4AbortionRights.org will hold flash protests to declare: "We Are All Lizelle Herrera! We Refuse to Let the Supreme Court Take Away Abortion Rights!"
On April 8, Lizelle Herrera (age 26) was arrested and charged with MURDER for allegedly inducing her own abortion in a border town in Texas. Her bail was set at $500,000.
A statement from RiseUp4AbortionRights reads:
"After public outcry, Lizelle was released and charges against her dropped. But tremendous harm was already done. Lizelle was put in handcuffs, locked in a jail cell, called a 'murderer,' shamed and demonized before the whole world.
A message of TERROR was sent to ALL women everywhere, especially undocumented women in the Rio Grande Valley now that abortion is banned in nearly all circumstances across Texas. These women now must fear going to the doctor with complications from self-induced abortions or even miscarriages, even if their life is at risk.
What happened to Lizelle is NOT some anomaly. It is the logical outcome of banning and demonizing abortion which is what the Supreme Court is on track to do this spring."
Sunsara Taylor, an initiator of RiseUp4AbortionRights and co-host of the RNL – Revolution, Nothing Less – Show says, “The real crime is not Lizelle Herrera allegedly self-inducing an abortion. The real crime is the coercive power of the state being used to force women to have children they do not want or go to dangerous, desperate measures to prevent it. This is female enslavement! We must Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights now so that this is does not become the future for women everywhere.”
RiseUp4AbortionRights.org has taken up the green bandana as a symbol for abortion rights throughout Latin America. Through sustained protests that have been called a “Green Wave” women in Argentina, Colombia, and Mexico have succeeded in decriminalizing abortion.
The RiseUp4AbortionRights.org initiating Statement has been signed by over 1200 people, including Rosanna Arquette, Kathy Najimy, Cornel West, Gloria Steinem, Lalah Hathaway, Susan Brownmiller, V (formerly Eve Ensler), and Sikivu Hutchinson.
