This week marks the 63rd anniversary of the March on Washington, in which a quarter of a million Black people and others massed to demand basic rights long denied them under this system. Two years after that march—and after bitter bloody struggle in which scores of people, mostly Black—lost their lives to cops and KKK’ers—the Voting Rights Act was passed by Congress. This year that Act was essentially rendered null and void by the Trump-appointed fascist Supreme Court and southern states moved to once more deny representation to Black people.
This Friday will witness a rally in Washington, DC, called by Al Sharpton and featuring Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez opposing this outrage. This comes at a time in which the fascists, with Trump at the fore, have already been moving to, and are threatening to even more completely and viciously, attack and usurp these elections, including through tactics designed to hold down, prevent and nullify the votes of Black people and immigrants who have become citizens.
