Brittany Watts is a 34-year-old Black woman who had a miscarriage that nearly killed her last fall. But after a week in the hospital, instead of being able to recuperate, she was treated like a criminal. She was arrested and charged with “abuse of a corpse” for flushing the fetal remains down the toilet. “Abuse of a corpse”!! For a fetus that died inside her womb and would not, could not, have survived.
Basically, Brittany Watts is facing a year in prison for being a woman who had a miscarriage! She was arrested in October and a grand jury is now considering whether to indict her.
Last September, Brittany was 21 weeks and 5 days pregnant when she was admitted to a hospital in Youngstown, Ohio with vaginal bleeding. Her water had broken prematurely, and doctors recommended that she have an induced delivery of the non-viable fetus (meaning the fetus would not survive at that point no matter what happened). According to the doctors, Brittany was at significant risk of death, infection or severe injury.
But, instead of immediately treating her, she was left waiting for eight hours for a hospital “ethics panel” to determine how to treat her. This was not a medical panel to decide what was going to be best for Brittany's life, but a so-called “ethics” panel to make sure the hospital was acting to the letter of Ohio's abortion laws (which outlaw abortion after 22 weeks).
Brittany checked herself out of the hospital and on September 22, in excruciating pain, she passed the fetus at home alone in her bathroom. A gofundme set up to support Brittany said, “As she was hemorrhaging and writhing in pain, she had no way of knowing that the miscarriage was only the beginning of her suffering. She could not have possibly imagined that the most private situation of her life—the same private situation that thousands of women in this country experience every year—would leave her demonized and fighting for her freedom.”
Within hours of checking herself back into the hospital because of extreme bleeding and pain, the police searched Brittany's bathroom, removed the toilet and destroyed it to search for fetal remains. A week later, still recovering from her near-death experience, she was questioned by the police for over an hour.
Soon after, she was arrested and dragged into court on these made-up charges. In court, the prosecutor kept calling the fetus that Brittany was carrying “a child,” despite the fact that fetuses are not babies!
What Accounts For The Attack On Abortion And What Must Be Done
From The Bob Avakian Interviews
This case is not some insane outlier, as outrageous as it is. It's part of a major push to classify fetuses as independent people, thereby turning women into incubators whose life, health, and dreams are subordinate to, and to serve, the incubation of that fetus.
This will mean the enslavement of women, preventing them from living as full human beings. As Bob Avakian, the revolutionary leader and author of the new communism has said:
The attack on the right to abortion is a move to further intensify the already horrific oppression of women, denying them control of their lives and their very bodies, reducing them to breeders of children, cruelly subordinated to men and a patriarchal male-supremacist society. Forced motherhood is in fact female enslavement.
