The latest round of UN climate talks, COP27, has started in Egypt. Here are some relevant facts:
- After some 30 years of these climate summits of “world leaders,” global emissions of greenhouse gases are still rising.
- At the 2015 Paris summit, leaders “pledged” to keep global temperatures from rising no more than 1.5 degrees Celsius (2.7 degrees Fahrenheit) compared with pre-industrial levels. This is the danger zone of temperature rise, past which catastrophic changes in the climate are far more likely. The planet has already gotten warmer by 1.1 degrees since the Industrial Revolution—and is now on track to heating up by 2.5 degrees Celsius (4.5 degrees Fahrenheit) by the end of this century.
- Just this year, extreme weather has resulted in floods that submerged some one-third of Pakistan and produced drought in the Horn of Africa that has left 22 million people on the brink of famine.
- “Climate-friendly” President Biden has been goading oil companies and Saudi Arabia to produce more and more oil as the U.S. imperialists engage in their proxy war with Russian imperialism.
REALITY CHECK: The COP27 gathering, like others before it, is worse than a sham. It is a cover for the continued use of fossil fuels by the imperialist great powers and intensifying suffering and environmental devastation in the global South due mainly to the carbon pollution and carbon inaction of the big imperialist powers.
AN INVITATION AND A CHALLENGE: If you see the need for system change, follow through on your convictions to what that really means, an ACTUAL revolution to overthrow this system of capitalism-imperialism. At a time of existential crises, while humanity and the environment are headed towards a terrible future, something truly emancipating can be wrenched out of this—making this a Rare Time when such a revolution becomes more possible in the U.S., the country most responsible for global warming. You need to learn about and become part of the revolution to overthrow this capitalist-imperialist system and replace it with a sustainable socialist economy and society based on the Constitution for the New Socialist Republic in North America. To learn more about this go to the Resource Page focused on global warming, including why it cannot be resolved under this system of capitalism-imperialism.
While there are no guarantees that we can save the planet, this is our best—and only—chance!
