EMERGENCY ALERT! Christian Fascists Move to Outlaw Abortion Nationwide

On February 24, a Christian fascist judge in Amarillo, Texas, Matthew Kacsmaryk, is scheduled to issue a ruling that could end medical abortion in the U.S. Everyone needs to be clear on this—if this case is upheld, it will effectively outlaw medical abortion in all 50 states, not just in states where abortion is currently illegal. Almost 65 million women could lose access to the abortion pill if this ban succeeds.

The Christian fascist anti-abortion group “Alliance Defending Freedom” (officially designated a “hate group” by the Southern Poverty Law Center) filed a lawsuit on behalf of several Christian fascist medical groups to ban use of the drug mifepristone, one of the drugs used in medical abortions. The ADF then went “judge shopping” (meaning they put their suit before a Christian fascist judge, Kacsmaryk), in hopes of maximizing their chance of getting a favorable hearing. Then, however the case is decided, they hope it will end up before the Christian-fascist-dominated U.S. Supreme Court.

And that “Christian fascist three-step” is intended to end medical abortion, and bring this country much closer to a full-blown theocracy, a place that has relentless oppression and degradation of women as a cornerstone.

Christian Fascists on a Rampage

Mifepristone was approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in 2000. It is commonly called “the abortion pill.” Tens of millions of women have used it over the past 23 years. The lawsuit in Amarillo filed by fascists claims that the federal government “fast-tracked” mifepristone in 2000, and ignored potentially adverse reactions. This is bullshit. In fact, as a recent study by three doctors concluded, “… after more than twenty years on the U.S. market, mifepristone has become one of the most studied drugs available and has proven to have an impeccable safety profile—many times safer than common drugs like penicillin or Viagra,” and a report from the FDA concluded that “medication abortion is safer than continuing a pregnancy to term or using other common medications.”

Medication abortions accounted for over half of all abortions nationwide even before the Supreme Court overturned the right to abortion, and “surged” in states across the country after it did so. The availability, ease of use, and safety of mifepristone used in combination with another medicine has enraged Christian fascists out to eliminate legal abortion completely. They initiated a number of measures, including the lawsuit in Amarillo, to continue their all-out assault on availability of all abortions everywhere in the country. Marjorie Dannenfelser, president of the rabid anti-abortion group “Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America,” vowed to a reporter that “Everyone who is trafficking these pills should be in jail for trafficking. It hasn’t happened, but that doesn’t mean it won’t.”

This attack should be taken very seriously. And for those who thought that the Christian fascists would somehow not go further after overturning Roe, or that the Democrats would somehow ride to the rescue, or the states in which abortion remained legal would not be touched: let this be a wake-up call.
