Fascist Threats Against The People's Forum Must Be Opposed

On September 4, the Republi-fascist-led House Committee on Ways and Means sent a letter to The People's Forum demanding that within two weeks, they turn over information about the group's finances, ties, and correspondence. The People's Forum is a nonprofit organization and event space in New York City involved in protests against the U.S.-backed Israeli genocide in Gaza, attacks on immigrants, and other issues. The Committee’s letter threatens investigation for these political activities and alleged violations of their nonprofit status.

The People's Forum issued a statement in response, saying in part: “This is a desperate attempt to silence our work and crush dissent. We will not be intimidated. This is not just an attack on The People’s Forum, but an assault on the fundamental rights of all people of conscience in the United States: the right to organize, the right to free speech, and the right to protest against injustice.”

What this Congressional committee is doing is an utter violation of what are supposed to be constitutionally guaranteed rights of freedom of speech, freedom of association and freedom from self-incrimination. It is aimed at actively repressing, threatening, and intimidating all the organizations and movements that are refusing to accept this ever-growing fascist nightmare. And it comes after a Republi-fascist senator threatened CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles), Union del Barrio, and Party for Socialism and Liberation in June with investigation and prosecution. The fascists are out to deliver a message to millions and millions of decent people, outraged at the mounting crimes pouring out by the day from the Trump regime, that any opposition to their crimes will face government repression.

This attack must be urgently opposed by every organization and individual who values fundamental rights of expression and organizing. We pledge our political support to those facing this attack and call on people and organizations everywhere to do the same.
