This January 22 marks the 50th anniversary of the 1973 Supreme Court decision in Roe v. Wade. That decision recognized abortion as a fundamental constitutional right. The decision in large part came out of the tremendous struggle of the 1960s and ’70s against the oppression of women and was an historic advance for women.
This decision was overturned last June by the Trump-appointed fascist Supreme Court. Women were violently thrust back into second-class citizenship. In the months leading up to the overturning of Roe v. Wade, Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights was formed to defend this right and fight what people could see even then what the Court was likely to do. Rise Up felt compelled to do this when the so-called women’s movement, or reproductive rights movement, adopted a passive stance, and with many sections actually opposing the mobilization of struggle against the Court.
Today, and for the rest of the week, we are providing perspective on this anniversary. We are running an interview with Rise Up co-initiator Merle Hoffman that Sunsara Taylor did on The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show on YouTube last week, as well as an article from two weeks ago from Paul Street, a writer and activist in Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights. To put this in the largest context, we are running an excerpt from Bob Avakian’s recent interview, Up Close and Personal With Bob Avakian: Heart and Soul & Hard-Core For Revolution on this truly fundamental question, and we are also reprinting key articles that he wrote during this struggle. We will this week be running other important statements as they come in. Stay tuned here and be sure not to miss the upcoming RNL Show on Thursday.
