On December 1, 2022, the one-year anniversary of the Supreme Court's oral arguments in the case that would overturn women's fundamental right to abortion, Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights has called for protests at federal courthouses and other public places to declare:

The December 1 anniversary needs to be marked with public repudiation, delivering a clear and bold statement that the fascist-packed Supreme Court's decision overturning abortion rights was illegitimate, that women's lives should not be up to a vote state by state, and that women need legal abortion on demand and without apology nationwide.

To build momentum towards December 1, Rise Up is also mobilizing flash actions on November 25, Black Friday, which is also an international day of action to stop violence against women.

Rise Up's call to action asks people to recall how they felt when they first heard the news that abortion rights were overturned last summer:

REMEMBER how you felt. The loss... the grief…the disbelief…

The cold shock at the cruelty and arrogance of the Christian fascists stripping away the constitutional rights of half of this country’s population, half a century of rights from all the women and girls of this land because if one state is not free—then all states are not free—and if one woman is not free—all women are not free!

Rage as states began hijacking women's bodies and forcing them to have children against their will. Horror at the growing pile-up of women's lives degraded, foreclosed, and endangered. Fresh tears for grandmothers and friends whose deaths by botched illegal abortions had long been shrouded in silence and shame. Dread that all this—and worse—now looms as a standing threat over every girlchild just learning to crawl.

Rise Up goes on to say: “This must never be accepted. It must be relentlessly resisted, repudiated and reversed!... Yet, the Democratic Party and mainstream pro-choice leaders adjust to this 'new normal.'”

Indeed, beneath all the recent proclamations by Democratic Party politicians, pundits and bourgeois media that “abortion won” in the midterms is the acceptance and normalization of the loss of the constitutional right to abortion nationwide and a strategy of fighting to protect abortion rights on a state-by-state basis. It is true that people in Michigan, California and several other states voted to protect abortion rights in their states. But nearly 22 million women across this country live in other states where abortion has already been banned—with an estimated 10,000 women forced to have children they otherwise would not have had in just the first two months after abortion was overturned—and this was not contested by the Democrats! On top of this, any statewide protection for abortion rights could be overridden by a federal abortion ban or by a further ruling by the fascist-controlled Supreme Court.

The only way this whole direction can be repudiated and reversed is through massive outpourings of resistance by furious women and others who refuse to accept this and are determined to fight for a future where women are treated as full human beings. This has to take place outside the narrow confines of this system's elections.

He exposes how the fight against this is closely bound up with whether humanity's future will be something terrible or something truly emancipating—a real revolution to get beyond this system that has the patriarchal domination of women woven deeply into its fabric and foundation and to bring about a new society where, among other things, the right to abortion is enshrined into the new Constitution from day one.¹ And he reveals how, precisely because of the depth of the crisis and sharp divisions that are deepening and increasingly ripping apart U.S. society from the top to the bottom, this is a time when this revolution is more possible—if growing numbers of people lift their sights to this revolution and fight urgently to make it real. The fury of women must be unleashed as a mighty force in this revolution!

All this underscores the importance of people from diverse political perspectives joining together with Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights in the streets on November 25 and even more powerfully on December 1 to demand the legal right to abortion on demand and without apology for women everywhere.
