Against Bogus Accusations of “Cult”

This movement is in the midst of a huge and crucial battle. Last week we covered and refuted the slanderous attacks against Rise Up 4 Abortion Rights, Sunsara Taylor and, in particular, Bob Avakian—attacks that have blanketed the internet in a number of major websites and other outlets, as well as social media. On Thursday, the RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show on YouTube and, in particular, its host Andy Zee, further went on the offensive, fighting for the truth and fighting for Bob Avakian’s revolutionary leadership. This week this website provides another weapon in this fight—an open letter from Sunsara Taylor that cuts through the scare words, confusion and ignorance and brings the truth: Bob Avakian Is Not a “Mad Cult Leader”: He Is a Deep Thinker and Profoundly Thoughtful Leader. An Open Letter to Fighters for Abortion Being Hit by This Accusation—And Others Who Are Hearing It. Sunsara starts by saying that Bob Avakian, BA, “is a very deep thinker and profoundly thoughtful leader,” and goes on to quote from BA’s own open letter to the theoretical physicist and author Lee Smolin that he “has dedicated his life to an understanding of human society and its historical development, and the potential and active struggle for its emancipating transformation—and more specifically... [is] someone who has taken up and applied Marxism/communism to these fundamental questions, precisely not as utopianism but as a scientific method and approach.”
Taylor then provides some of the basic substance of that application. Especially, but not only, if you’re new to this site, read her piece carefully and more than once—it answers the “cult” accusation, and it goes way beyond it. But don’t just read this letter; take advantage of the PDF version to spread it online and share it in “in real life,” printing it as a pamphlet. The point is this: answering these attacks—which are as potentially serious as they are utterly groundless—is critically important, and these are the tools to do that, for yourselves and for others.
Important and urgent as it is to get this truth out now—and it is extremely important, given those potential dangers—it’s important to root all this in some even more bedrock truths: that humanity needs revolution and the new communism developed by Bob Avakian; that revolutions are extremely complex undertakings that require extremely developed and high-level leadership; and that Bob Avakian has proven over 50 years, in the problems that he has tackled and solved and the example that he has set, that he is that leadership.
If you are new to the site, read Bob Avakian's extremely important analysis of the current crossroads, Something Terrible, Or Something Truly Emancipating: Profound Crisis, Deepening Divisions, The Looming Possibility Of Civil War—And The Revolution That Is Urgently Needed. A Necessary Foundation, A Basic Roadmap For This Revolution, which lays out the situation humanity faces, and how to wrench out of the mounting horror something truly emancipating—through revolution. There is the deep analysis and the roadmap to do that. If you are not new to the site, return to that work—dig deeper into it—there are layers. Use as a guide in building the movement for revolution the 7 Key Points, the basic principles that boil these down into very synthesized terms. And new or old, wage struggle with people, serious struggle, ferocious struggle to get into this and take this up. For here is the cardinal point in all this:
The masses of people—basic masses and people of other strata, or walks of life, as well—desperately need the leadership of BA and the new communism, even though in their masses they don’t yet know it, and some who do are resisting it. How often do the masses have a situation where they have such a leader?! And this takes on particular significance in this “rare time,” a time in which a revolution could actually be made—a time which must not be squandered and wasted. Anything and anyone that obstructs the means by which these masses come to know this and take it up is doing great harm, even as it is important to distinguish between those who consciously and actively do this and those who are simply “spontaneously” following the prevailing trends, putrid as they are.
This issue of the website is both a tool to take on these attacks, vigorously and ferociously, to expose those who are perpetrating them… an urgent invitation to get deeper into the basic foundation of understanding and the roadmap to liberation contained in “Something Terrible, Or Something Truly Emancipating,” and the concentration of this in the 7 Key Points.
