INVASIONS!!! We hear the MAGA fascist Stephen Miller cry that the Mexican flags people are carrying in protests in the streets of LA are evidence of a Mexican invasion to take over the United States.
Who has invaded who?
Who invaded and took in a bloody war more than half of the other’s national territory?
In 1846-1848, in what is called the Mexican-American war, the United States sent its Army and the Marine Corps to carry out a bloody massacre in Mexico. Back in school, did they make you learn the “Marines’ Hymn,” which talks about the Halls of Montezuma? That’s what they were talking about—an unprovoked invasion of Mexico.
Even Ulysses S. Grant, who was a captain in this war and later led the Union troops in the Civil War, said that the U.S. war against Mexico “was one of the most unjust wars ever waged by a stronger against a weaker nation.” As a result of that war, the United States stole half of Mexico’s territory, including present day California, Nevada, Utah, New Mexico, most of Arizona and Colorado, and parts of Oklahoma, Kansas, and Wyoming. Just to be clear, Mexico did not invade the United States, the U.S. took this land just because it could. This was part of “Manifest Destiny”—the ridiculous and murderous idea that “God” had willed the establishment of the American empire “from Sea to Shining Sea”—and it was part of trying to extend the territories in which slavery would be allowed.1
After the Civil War, the U.S. increasingly dominated the Mexican economy. They fed like a parasite on what remained of the Mexican country. Today the U.S. even more thoroughly dominates Mexican agriculture and Mexican industry, with auto workers in Mexico making one-tenth of what they do here. This dominant position forms part of the basis of why people of Mexico and of Mexican descent have been discriminated against and treated as inferior ever since. And that is why some people even today say, “We didn’t cross the border, the border crossed us!”
In fascist America, it is fine to carry and brandish the flag of the Confederacy, honoring the bloody banner of criminals who fought to defend the enslavement of Black people, but it is “treason” to carry the flag of a country that the U.S. unjustly invaded multiple times. In fascist America, it's OK to rig up gallows, and to threaten, beat and even kill people to prevent a legal election from being made official, but it is not OK for a Mexican-American U.S. senator from California to ask a question of the secretary of the Department of Homeland Security who says she has come to “liberate” Los Angeles. In fascist America, that senator must be thrown to the ground and handcuffed—to make clear who has the power and who even is allowed to ask questions.
