Behind the cold statistics (see After Years of Promises and Reforms, the Plague of Police Violence and Murder Got Even Worse in 2023: Only Revolution Can End This Madness) are thousands of human lives stolen at the hands of murdering pigs. Here are just a few of the people killed by police last year:
Keenan Anderson, Los Angeles, California: LAPD cops killed Keenan Anderson, a 31-year-old high school teacher and father, after a traffic accident on January 3. Anderson appeared disoriented, at one point begging for help from the pigs. But instead of helping, the cops tased him six times—once for over 30 seconds—while holding him down by his neck in the middle of the street. Anderson died four hours after arriving at the hospital.

Tyre Nichols, Memphis, Tennessee: On January 7, Tyre Nichols, a 29-year-old Black man, was pulled over by Memphis police for supposed “reckless driving.” When the cops pepper-sprayed and tased him, Tyre broke free and began running away. Five Memphis pigs caught up with him and surrounded him and began to beat him mercilessly. RowVaughn Wells, Tyre’s mother, said he was coming home from his job at FedEx and was just two minutes away. These killers, members of an “elite” police unit called The Scorpions, continued clubbing, kicking, tasing, and pepper spraying Tyre for three minutes. Tyre asked, over and over, as he was being beaten, “What did I do?” Three days after this pack of murderous cops stopped and brutalized him, Tyre Nichols died at a hospital.

Manuel Esteban Páez Terán, who went by “Tortuguita,” Atlanta, Georgia: Tortuguita was killed by Georgia State Troopers on January 18 during a violent raid by police in Atlanta's Weelaunee People's Park. Tortuguita was taking part in a protest to stop a planned $90 million police “training facility”—named “Cop City” by those fighting to stop it. An autopsy report showed Tortuguita was shot 57 times by police and that they (Tortuguita was non-binary) had no gunpowder residue on their hands when they were killed—directly contradicting the claim by officials that the pigs were returning fire after a state trooper was killed with a shot coming from Tortuguita’s direction.

Jor’Dell Richardson, Aurora, Colorado: Police shot and killed 14-year-old Jor’Dell Richardson on June 1, chasing him down an alley after an “alleged robbery” at a store. Within seconds of encountering Jor’Dell, one of the cops screamed, “I’m going to shoot your ass! Dude, I’m going to shoot you!” One pig tackled him, and the other shot the youth in the abdomen. Police initially claimed he had a gun and publicly referred to Jor’Dell as an “armed robbery suspect.” They later changed their story to say he had a pellet gun. Jor’Dell’s last words as he lay dying on the pavement: “I can’t breathe. Help.”

Jawan “Jay” Dallas, Mobile, Alabama: On July 1, 36-year-old Jawan Dallas died after he was repeatedly tased by Mobile pigs who demanded his ID, even though they didn’t suspect him of any crime. Phil Williams, Jawan Dallas’s father, said, “Mobile Police Department, you straight murdered my son. You were not there to serve and protect him, you were there to destroy. You killed him.” Jawan Dallas was one of four people murdered by Mobile cops in 2023, including a 16-year-old youth killed in a pre-dawn raid in which he was not the “intended target.”

Jarrell Garris, New Rochelle, New York: On July 3, Jarrell Garris, a 37-year-old Black man, was shot by police in New Rochelle, just north of New York City. The bullet to the neck fatally injured Garris, and he died in the hospital a week later. Jarrell Garris’s “crime,” for which he had to pay with his life, according to the murdering pigs? He allegedly ate a banana and a few grapes at the New Rochelle Farms market and walked out without paying. His family said he was struggling with mental health issues.

Eddie Irizarry, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania: On August 14, Philadelphia cop Mark Dial fired six bullets into 27-year-old Puerto Rican-born Eddie Irizarry through a closed car window at point blank range during a traffic stop. The pigs claimed Irizarry had gotten out of his car and lunged with a knife at Dial. But the body cam footage—which the authorities withheld from the public for three weeks—showed Dial jumping out of the police van as soon as it stopped, running in front of Irizarry's car shouting “show that fucking hand” and “I will fucking shoot you,” and immediately opening fire. Dial was eventually charged with murder, but at his preliminary hearing, the judge dropped all charges for “lack of evidence.” That decision was reversed, and murder and other charges were reinstated against the murdering pig.

Dontel Thompson and Charion Lockett, Houston Texas: On October 3, a grand jury ruled that Houston pig Devin Inocencio would not be charged with two of the three murders he has been involved in over the past few years. Earlier this year, Inocencio shot and killed 19-year-old Dontel Thompson and 27-year-old Charion Lockett in separate incidents. Lockett’s mother told reporters the police “did not come in an HPD car and say, 'We serve you a warrant,' they pulled up in four unmarked cars and just started shooting at him.” The third person Inocencio is known to have killed was in an adjacent county. No charges have been filed there either.

Niani Finlayson, Lancaster, California: On December 4, Niani Finlayson called 911 for help with a domestic violence attack by her ex-boyfriend. But less than three seconds after LA sheriffs arrived at the home, one of them fired four shots into her, while her daughter watched in horror. It appears (in body cam video) that Niani was holding a kitchen knife and saying that the ex-boyfriend attacked her. A female sheriff entered the house first. Then a second sheriff came in and he immediately opened fire, killing Niani Finlayson.
