RefuseFascism.org protest in Washington DC June 14
For the past two weeks, the fascist regime headed by Donald Trump has gone into even fuller overdrive than its notoriously vicious “first hundred days.” This has included but is not limited to:
Episode 252 of The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show
- Increasingly brazen attempts to weld the U.S. military to the personal rule of Donald Trump, to wield that military against any who would protest against Trump, and to effectively replace the rule of law with the rule of Trump. This was concentrated in what was intended to be a massive and threatening parade of the U.S. Army presided over by Trump on his birthday and cheered on by 200,000 MAGAmaniacs. (Go here for The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show clip on this.)
- A radically stepped up and extremely brutal assault on immigrants, along with violent assaults on those protesting or just “getting in the way of” these attacks; (Go here for The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show clip on this.)
- Legal and physical assaults against members of the Democratic Party opposition who oppose the lawless and violent fascist attack against immigrants. (See: "Mounting Threats, Attacks on Democratic Politicians Signify Rapid Drive Towards Open Fascist Rule by Trump")
- Threats of investigation by Congressional committees dominated by fascists against groups that have been associated with protests of Trump’s assault on immigrants or even groups whose sole “crime” is providing social services to these immigrants—that is, fishing expeditions designed to stigmatize, intimidate and possibly set these groups up for legal charges.
- Finally, in a totally unconstitutional threat, Trump said on Wednesday that anyone who demonstrated against that Saturday’s scheduled military parade could expect to be met with “very big force.” (Go here for response from Sunsara Taylor of RefuseFascism.org.)
This has met resistance. Widespread resistance. At times, powerfully determined resistance.
- For days now growing numbers of youth have stood up against the assault on immigrants in particular. They have come out night after night in Los Angeles and other parts of California, as well as Chicago, New York, and elsewhere. In addition, people have resisted raids when and where they have occurred, standing in the way of ICE at all kinds of different places, filming and spreading the word to others to come. (Go here for The RNL—Revolution, Nothing Less!—Show clip on this.)
- On Friday, June 6, and then with particular power on Friday, June 13, veterans of the U.S. military came to DC to protest the regime’s cuts on veterans benefits, the fascist use of the military on American soil, and in some important cases, to testify as to the criminal nature of what the U.S. does around the world. (Go here and here for the June 13 Instagram posts from About Face.)
- Then, this past Saturday, the world witnessed a tidal wave of protest against Donald Trump. Millions of people in approximately 2,000 cities and towns came out to denounce Trump and his policies. Many among the crowd, often with homemade signs, called out the regime for what it actually is: fascist. The people were fierce, joyous, determined, angry, agonized, and open-minded. Many professed deep belief in what they held to be the principles upon which this country was founded. Others were intensely skeptical and angry about America—whether its historic (and ongoing) rape and plunder of Latin America, or the genocide that the U.S. imperialists continue to finance and arm in Palestine. But when the chant, "Trump Must Go NOW!" went up, people of all kinds of views took it up. (See Sights and Sounds From Across the Country, June 14: No Kings Day Protests.)

Meanwhile, in DC itself, in bold defiance of Trump’s vicious and shameless threat, Refuse Fascism led a march and rally of over 1,000 people right up to the White House and then back through the streets of DC. (See coverage from Good Morning America.) People from many of the viewpoints outlined above gave powerful speeches coming from those differing viewpoints uniting on the fascist character of the threat, the urgency of making it impossible for this regime to continue ruling, and the central role of massive, nonviolent resistance to doing that. (See Refuse Fascism spokesperson Sunsara Taylor and former city council member from Asbury Park, NJ Jim Keady speak.) Later that night, on the other side of town, Trump reviewed his military parade in front of a strangely subdued audience.
More than one TV commentator called this a “split-screen” day—and in terms of the sheer force of numbers and moral certitude, on this day the side acting in the interests of humanity scored a big advance. This shows that deep in their hearts, millions abhor Trump and the fascist movement he spearheads and represents.
But the fact is, the fascists are still in power. They control the executive and legislature, they have packed the Supreme Court, and they are increasingly attempting to mold the armed forces in their fascist image. They may have been taken off guard by Saturday, but like mad dogs, they can be most dangerous when they feel cornered. The basic truth is this: they are on an ideological and political mission to remake all of society as a fascist nightmare, and they must be thoroughly defeated and driven from power. Now is the time to urgently redouble and redouble again our efforts.
Those millions who marched on Saturday most of all represented potential: the potential to turn our collective outrage and aspirations into a focused mission—the Trump fascist regime must go NOW! But to realize that potential, those millions need a much clearer understanding of both the fascist character of this regime and the fact that it can become too late. They need a better sense of the deep roots of this fascism in this society.1 They need a better sense of the different ways that massive nonviolent resistance could come together with sharpening conflicts and crisis at the top of society to accomplish that mission.2 They need to be organized into Refuse Fascism around the clear understanding that is embodied in Refuse Fascism’s core slogans: “In The Name of Humanity, We Refuse to Accept A Fascist America,” and “The Trump Fascist Regime Must Go NOW!” They need to understand how to contend with and prevent divide-and-conquer schemes from splitting and disabling the needed resistance.3 They need to know what the revcoms really stand for, not only uniting all who can be united to defeat this fascism, but bringing in a whole new way to live and a fundamentally different system.4
Finally, the people who came out so determined to stop Trump last Saturday need to be mobilized to stay in the streets, step up the struggle against these vicious fascists and, especially, to come out in force on July 1 through 4 in the actions called by Refuse Fascism, with a special focus in Washington, DC.
In the millions who came out on Saturday, in all their inspiring diversity and in their mix of delightful humor and deadly seriousness, we can see profound potential; but it will take all of us to realize that potential.
What you—and tens of thousands like you—do now will have everything to do with what kind of future humanity gets.
