On the morning of Wednesday, January 7, ICE agents carrying out one of their gestapo operations in a Minneapolis neighborhood shot and killed a woman in her car. Renee Nicole Good was 37 years old, a U.S. citizen, and one of the “community observers” opposing the ICE action. As the ICE thugs milled around the car as she was dying inside after being shot close-range in the head, a doctor approached and offered assistance, but gun-toting agents yelled at him to “back off,” claiming they had their own medic. It took 15 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) claimed “rioters” began blocking ICE agents, and that Good “weaponized” her car, aiming it at the agents, and an officer fired “defensive shots.” They called her a "domestic terrorist." Trump backed up this justification for the killing in a social media post, and called the victim a “professional agitator.” But as local news station KARE 11 reported, “Numerous video posts circulating on social media are... challenging the DHS narrative, however, with several graphic videos showing the interaction between the vehicle and agents and the moment shots are fired before the vehicle crashes. A witness told KARE 11 that the victim was trying to flee from ICE agents when she was shot dead.” 

Jacob Frey, Minneapolis mayor, said, “They are already trying to spin this as an action of self defense. Having seen the video myself, I wanna tell everybody directly, that is bullshit." He demanded that ICE leave the city and state “immediately” and said, “We stand rock solid with our immigrant and refugee communities."

In the following days, detailed analysis of the video of the shooting by the New York Times, Washington Post, and others even more clearly showed that the DHS and Trump were out-and-out lying when they claimed that the ICE agent was in “danger” when he shot Good. The NY Times noted, “An analysis from the footage from three camera angles show that the vehicle appears to be turning away from a federal officer as he opened fire.” (emphasis added)

Renee Nicole Good had a six-year-old son who she had dropped off at school the morning of her murder. She also had two other children. Becca Good, Renee’s wife, said in a statement that “Renee lived by an overarching belief: there is kindness in the world and we need to do everything we can to find it where it resides and nurture it where it needs to grow.” She said she and Renee had been at the site of the ICE operation to “help our neighbors,” and that “We had whistles. They [ICE] had guns.”

This is not the first time ICE has fired at people protesting them. In Chicago in October, ICE goons shot Marimar Martinez, who was part of a protest “caravan” tailing them as they carried out their criminal attacks on immigrants. ICE then claimed she had tried to ram their agent—when, in fact, the agent’s body cam footage showed that Martinez did not threaten the agent. In fact, the footage shows him screaming at her, “Do something bitch,” and then pulling over and shooting her five times!

And across the country, these armed thugs are carrying out the Trump fascist regime’s campaign of mass terror and brutality against immigrants, and anyone coming to their support, in city after city. Renee Good's shooting in Minneapolis comes in the midst of the latest ICE “surge”—2,000 ICE agents mobilized in what DHS calls its biggest operation yet. This ICE “surge” in Minneapolis, which has the largest concentration of people of Somalian descent in the U.S., comes in the wake of Trump’s declaration that all Somali immigrants should be deported, calling them “garbage” and saying they should “go back to where they came from” and that “their country is no good for a reason.”

A large crowd of protesters gathered at the scene right after the shooting of Renee Nicole Good. There were vigils and protests in Minneapolis and across the country that night, and people have continued to get out into the streets in her memory and in outrage at her murder.

This cold-blooded ICE murder must be met with condemnation and protest across the country. And this latest ICE gestapo outrage puts even more urgency to the demand: Trump Fascist Regime Must Go NOW!
